will the ubcd4win help me with my dell computer. I have a system 32 config file missing error. The file is not corrupted it is missing. I tried to do a back up in the recovery council but it does not find the config system file. Any thoughts on how to fix this problem would be appreciated. I also tried to boot with the last known good configuration. No luck.

System32\Config is a directory. What file is missing from the directory? You can try running "chkdsk c: /f /r" from the command prompt then use Registry Restore Wizard to replace the missing registry files.

sorry I work midnights and just woke up. I tried running chkdsk and it did not work. The file missing is the windows\system32\config\system the system will not boot up. I'm trying to fix this without formatting the disk.

You were told two steps basically... run chkdsk /r ... AND then use the Registry Restore Wizard found in the project... the first fixes possible corrupt files... the second replaces the registry files if its possible from the System Restore folders.... but not following the instructions as you were told will get you nowhere

chkdsk was to see if problem was corrupt file system
If any registry files vanish Windows will have serious problems

The 'registry restore wizard' can look at the set of backup of registry & critical files IF you have 'System Restore' enabled

You can select folder with complete set of registry files with date when system was working OK

(hidden folder \System Volume Information\ becomes visible & accessible when running from ubcd4win CD)

It didn't work or it didn't fix your problem? Was there an error message? Did you run Registry Restore Wizard to roll your registry back to an earlier snapshot?

Dont know how to run registry restore wizard.

I don't know how to run the restore wizard and set it back to the last known configuration. I did have system restore enabled before this problem accured

How can I run this from the command prompt in recovrey console

You can't... you must build a UBCD4Win disk and boot from that to run that util

Could you tell me how to restore these files from the command prompt on the recovery console. I did have system restore enabled when when my comp. went down

registry recovery is not impossible from the recovery consol but it is a very complicated procedure

knowledge base article above explains how to do it.

I have never tried following it from the command consol
It is possible to follow from BartPE /UBCD4Win CD using a file manager such as A43

But r r wizard included in ubcd4win makes it relatively easy

I would suggest emergence file backup to a usb disk (hard disk, memory, DVD)from ubcd4win before trying this procedure, unless you have upto date backup of important data

Thank You, I will look into the microsoft website later tonight. I am waiting for my system cd from Dell. Unforturnately I don't have one and I'm unable to make a ubcd at this point.
