As I reported earlier support for the public antivirus is ending this month.

If anyone is interested I've created a bat file that will rebuild the ISO for you each time you update it. I think this way is far easier than the instructions on the website.

Create a folder called PublicAV on your CD drive. File path should be c:\PublicAV if not you will have to edit the bat file to alter the following - set PublicAV=c:\PublicAV if you don't the bat file won't work.

Extract the file publicupdate.exe into this folder.

Or modded version with the bat files self-extracting file 78mb Modded PublicAV File - Please note I have not created this ISO, nor do I keep it upto date.

Note this is a archive version Public AV is no longer updated so YOU WILL NEED TO UPDATE IT for it to be of any use

Extract the contents of the zip, extract the contents of the ISO (ISOBuster, Winrar, IZArc will all extract ISO's) into the folder c:\PublicAV

Run PublicAVupdate.bat this will then download any files that need updating.
Files updated.
McAfee Virus Defs (Both Sdat and Scan folder)
Stinger
Norton AV Defs
HijackThis
Adaware Defs
Spybot Defs
CoolwebSearch

You should now see the following file structure in the above folder:
boot.images
Guides
McAfee
NAV
scan
Security
Spyware
TCP-IP
Tools
Virus
BOOTABLE.img
BootCatalog.cat
build.bat
indexlite.htm
mkisofs.exe

Now run build.bat, this will create you the ISO called avcdpub.iso in the folder c:\PublicAV

Remember to delete avcdpub.iso in the folder each time you rebuild the CD.

UBCD Updater

UBCD Updater

Ultimate Boot CD is a freeware tool that contains several DOS base AV scanner. However these scanners are usually out of date when you download the file, for them to be effective they need keeping upto date.

The UBCD Updater is a bat file that will download the updates for McAfee, F-Prot, AntiVir and Avast and rebuild the ISO for you. Unfortunately due to how AVG update there product I'm unable to offer a update for there scanner.

Yes, you could do that. Or Ultraiso can add files to an iso from the command line - no rebuild neded.

You could use UltraISO but it cost's money, my method is free

I updated the batch file to make it so it now update McAfee, Norton, AdAware & Spybot.

To use it, move McAfeeUpdate.bat & Download.exe back into C:\PublicAV

Edit McAfeeUpdate.bat to show:

When I use the build.bat program, I am getting this error:

C:\PublicAV>mkisofs -iso-level 1 -b BOOTABLE.img -c boot.cat -J -l -R -r -V -o a
vcdpub.iso c:\PublicAV
mkisofs: Warning: -rock has same effect as -rational-rock on this platform.
mkisofs: No such file or directory. Invalid node - avcdpub.iso


Any suggestions?

I had the same error but the ISO is bootable and works. I'm not that hot on mkisofs, hopefully one of the others will pass comment.

I have the same issue, but after the error it just stopped - I didn't get an iso file.

You got the error and then it went on to produce the iso?

I'll check it all again tomorrow, but I have got the ISO from the above bat command.

For some reason the download version command is a bit different from mine.

mkisofs -iso-level 1 -b BOOTABLE.img -c boot.cat -J -l -R -r -o -V -o avcdpub.iso c:\PublicAV

In the download version:
mkisofs -iso-level 1 -b BOOTABLE.img -c boot.cat -J -l -R -r -V -o a avcdpub.iso c:\PublicAV

The extra -o for some reason makes all the difference and I don't know where the a bit's come from

I've updated the download so please either redownload or just edit the bat file in notepad and add the extra -o in the correct location.

The download page for Public AV is now gone, if you failed to get a copy while you had the chance I'm afraid you've blown it.

You now really only have 3 options:

Use the Ultimate BootCd

Use the UBCD4Win

Or build your own dos boot CD.

Is this project going to continue support for the PAVCD? I was hoping the batch updating program would be offered for quickly updating the iso.

I'll keep the bat file to update the PAVCD on my webspace for a while yet. I make even make some modifications to it, in line with what Lawson has been doing with the ubcd4win update bat file.
