Public AntiVirus updater has had a update.

There is now a additional bat file called CustomPublicAVupdate.bat which will add a new folder called WinTools.

    This will add the following:
    DrWeb CureIT
    Trend Micros Sysclean
Sophos for Dos and 32bit command line scanners

The following install setup files for:
    AntiVir
    Avast
    AVG
    RescueME Virus Removal

Hey, I've stumbled upon your site after trying to find a way to update the PublicAV boot CD. I actually worked right beside John Burns (aka The Nyquil Kid) who created it here at GWU. When he left, he left everything. No boot cd and no way to update it.

Anyway, I love the tool and wanted to get it going again. I've been trying your update.bat files and everything seems to go smoothly until it gets to the symantec update. It'll contact the ftp server and sit there on Enumerating files in directory, then eventually display FTP cannot enumerate files: operation timed out. and drops me back to a command prompt.

Any ideas, or any additional info you need?

        Hi Dave

This is the line in the code to update Norton:
        ftp://ftp.symantec.com/AVDEFS/norton_antivirus/*i32.exe latest.exe /newest/update /delete

I've had reports in the past about the same problem but with Trend Micros website, as I use download.exe in my bartpe plugin which is in the ubcd4win. All what I can suggest is that it's probably a firewall issue either with the local PC or if your behind a corporate firewall speak to whoever is in charge of it. The good news is it's the last bit in the code if your just updating the CD, it may just be easier to update Norton manually.

If your wanting to use my custom bat file then you'll need to edit the bat file and either remove it or put it to the end.

The only other reason if may give this message is if the server is offline or being updated at the time of running but I think this is unlikely.

I've never had any problems using download.exe so I'm afraid I can't really offer much in how to solve it.

If you do figure anything out please let me know.

Thanks for the info, however that line of code is exactly as it stands in my .bat file. I doubt the site is down as this has been doing this to me since thursday of last week. You dont think it'd have anything to do with the switches at the end, do you?

At any rate, how do I update the norton on the disk manually? I'm fairly new at this, but not a mental midget... I just dont know how to plug in the downloadable updater they have into a file like this.

I had it working with the above unless I messed around a bit too much.......

However there should be a space in the switches:

            download ftp://ftp.symantec.com/AVDEFS/norton_antivirus/*i32.exe latest.exe /newest /update /delete

In the code in the download /newest/update it appears like this.

Let me know if it makes any difference. I've just ran the code (both with the space and without) and it worked for for me at home and it works for me at work.

If you want to manually update just delete the last line of code and download the updates from the FTP listed or Symantec Download from here obviously put the updated download def file in the norton folder. :)

Then just run the build.bat and it will create a new ISO for you.

Awesome.. Thank you very much. The space worked for me. I put a space in the publicavupdate.bat file and everything ran as it should. I really appreciate your help.

Thanks for the update to the update. I use the PublicAV frequently. I even asked nyquil kid if he needed someone to keep it for him but he wanted to retire the project. This is wonderful. Between PublicAV and UBCD4WIN, my toolbox is 98% complete.

I can understand why he wanted to retire it, but I think it's a nice little CD and still has it's uses so I decided to create a bat file to keep it updated for myself which I then decided to share with anyone else who might want it. :)

More updates have now been added.

PublicAVupdate.bat full list of tools that will now be updated.

I just tried the custom update batch file and it seems to work great (as long as you are not on dial-up as the updates take forever to get the first time if you are). Thanks to all that made this happen, nyquil-kid originally, and now stidyup, etc.

Couple of minor issues or improvements that I would suggest (I may be able to work on some of them).

First issue is to come up with an easy way to edit the Public AV htm document on the disk that is auto-run on Windows insertion (this had the date always updated along with the notes on fixes, new additions, changes etc.) Any ideas, other than simple manual update with Notepad or htm creator to make this file update as part of the batch file?

Also since the C:\PublicAV (or whatever you have set up for your folder) has to have the utilities in it from one of the PublicAVupdate.bat, these utilities get burned into the new ISO. It would be pretty easy to allow a new folder in the c:\PublicAV called update which would hold all the bat files, utilities etc. and then you could clean up the CDR root directory some and not have the stuff there. Small edits to the batch files may be needed to work properly.

Another issue, In addition to the virus scanning capabilities, there are quite a few virus removal tools out there - Symantec's are already included in the NAV folder but Grisoft AVG have some of these removal tools for individual infections. Including these on the CD would be nice (there is room, I have most of them in different folder). SOme of the names that AVG uses are different than Symantec's and this CD has no install of Norton or Symantec's AV scanner, since no free version is availble other than their on-line web based checkup. Not sure if there is an easy way to automate the update of these or if a 1 time download (which I have done for the Grisoft versions up until a few months ago.)

Finally, I have also been using the mwav.exe some for scanning- it is based on Kaspersky Labs definitions from MicroWorld and the scanner only is again a free download. It is a self extracting zip file that has the definitions included so regular downloads and updates would be needed just like the others AVG, etc added.

                        Hi thanks for the feedback.

I'm unaware of any way to edit the html file other than manually, if there is it's beyond me but if any one would like to input on how to do then I'll add it.

If I get time I might create a update folder, but my aim is simplicity so that anyone can rebuild the CD. Creating a folder called update adds something else for the novice to think about, but it would make it neater.

There's no install for Norton as the trial can't be download without registering for it. Secondly it's not free, all the installs which can be download are free for home user's I'm not interested in promoting paid for AV and my own inclusion criteria mean it must be totally free. Adding more individual virus cleaning tools would be nice but quite honestly I haven't got the time to set that up, it's something which would need to be constantly updated as each new threat appears and I don't think I have got enough time to be managing that task.

Mwav is a tricky one as it won't remove virus's unless you use a older version of the .com file, but then it won't remove or find adaware, however for anyone who's a techie it's a good guide for manual removal of reg entries etc...

                          Download Public AV updater here

As I reported earlier support for the public antivirus is ending this month.

If anyone is interested I've created a bat file that will rebuild the ISO for you each time you update it.  I think this way is far easier than the instructions on the website.

Create a folder called PublicAV on your CD drive.  File path should be c:\PublicAV if not you will have to edit the bat file to alter the following - set PublicAV=c:\PublicAV if you don't the bat file won't work.

Extract the file publicupdate.exe into this folder.

                          Download Public AV 65.2mb here

                          Or RAR file download 62.7mb
                          Public AV Rar file

Or modded version with the bat files self-extracting file 78mb Modded PublicAV File - Please note I have not created this ISO, nor do I keep it upto date.

Note this is a archive version Public AV is no longer updated so YOU WILL NEED TO UPDATE IT for it to be of any use

Extract the contents of the zip, extract the contents of the ISO (ISOBuster, Winrar, IZArc will all extract ISO's) into the folder c:\PublicAV

Run PublicAVupdate.bat this will then download any files that need updating.
                          Files updated.
McAfee Virus Defs (Both Sdat and Scan folder)
                          Stinger
                          Norton AV Defs
                          HijackThis
                          Adaware Defs
                          Spybot Defs
                          CoolwebSearch

You should now see the following file structure in the above folder:
                          boot.images
                          Guides
                          McAfee
                          NAV
                          scan
                          Security
                          Spyware
                          TCP-IP
                          Tools
                          Virus
                          BOOTABLE.img
                          BootCatalog.cat
                          build.bat
                          indexlite.htm
                          mkisofs.exe

Now run build.bat, this will create you the ISO called avcdpub.iso in the folder c:\PublicAV

Remember to delete avcdpub.iso in the folder each time you rebuild the CD.

Please keep checking back as more improvements are likely to be made :)

You can also use magiciso to make iso image with these files.

I am aware of the no free version (only trial) maybe I did not state it clearly, what I was talking about ws the free removal or cleaning utils like fixnimba, etc. Grisoft has rmstubby etc. available. It could be easier since the scan can be done with the free AVG to remove detected viruses.

I also know that the free download of mwav does not remove the items but does do a good job of scanning, finding stuff that other paid versions do not detect like spyware, trojans, and malware.

I have followed the instructions for the creation of a c:\PublicAV folder and moved the contents of the Public AV into that folder. If I run the customupdate batch file, it seems to complete without errors. However I just noticed the files in the scan folder are still showing the date of Jun 28th. That in my case was the last download I did of the PublicAV from nyquil-kids web site. So 2 questions on the batch files. First is any capabilities to create a log file with any errors in the C:\PublicAV folder? And second question, since the downloads seem to work, the ISO creation is working (date of the ISO is yesterday, and the Wintools directory is in the ISO, what would the trouble be with the McAfee sdat, definitions not getting extracted to the scan folder, any ideas or clues? Thoght I had it working.
