Hopefully this issue can get fixed.  Unfortunately I haven't got a large enough usb device to join in the fun :( But this will be awesome if the ubcd4win can boot off a usb device.

I just jumped in (having read first few posts and last few) blind, so forgive if I say something stupid.
I go over this myself every couple months to see if it's been fixed. I've read the M$ and Intel whitepapers on this, and apparently it cannot be done currently due to the way Windows loads. In a nutshell, the USB reinumeration as Windows loads disconnects your USB device and kills the boot process.
If this has been resolved/worked around, let me know. I have a 4GB drive_vault I'm more than willing to bring into the testing process.

For what it's worth, I'm testing this with a dual-boot mini-DVD of UBCD/UBCD4WIN. I'll certainly let everyone know if I get it worked out.
In fact, (off-subject) if I get mkisofs working with the new UBCD relase (3.3) and my setup, I'll try recompiling my UBCD4WIN version. I have a freeware rootkit detector I also want to test and may have resolved booting into Ghost9/SAV AV.

You can boot from a usb drive if you follow the instructions described HERE. It loads the entire ISO image into ram.

Which one? Do you have a link to it?

The load to RAM sounds workable, but I boot a mini-DVD ISO - guess I'm screwed on my full version. I think I'll try the slimmed down version and see if it works. Thanks for the heads up.
The rootkit tool is from BlackIce, I think. I mistated that it's freeware. The beta is free and works on my system. No clue if the final release will be $$ or not.

          Hi everyone,

I have some knowledge on bootstraping / mbr and stuff.
I would like to join the team if SteelTrepid thinks we are still doing it.
Going to perform some tests by myself in the meanwhile :)

          Regards,

There is an interesting article in PC Mag on loading up your USB key with applications that you can run from it. Included is a section on making it bootable for BartPE

            Go look at USB Key

I am the author of the USB boot howto guide here:
              http://home.graffiti...B/USBstick.html

Just wanted to let you know that I have put online a new FAQ list here:
              http://home.graffiti...SB/USBfaqs.html

And MORE IMPORTANT, that Codebeetle at 911CD forums has put together a nice app to install BartPE to USB stick:
              http://www.911cd.net...showtopic=13784

(going to add this last info to the FAQs shortly)

How about booting from a CD still, but using a USB drive for a bit of rewritable storage. This would be similar to MandrakeMove! Linux livecd.

You could then have the UBCD4WIN check for USB drive, and use updated definition files from it, as well as having some personalised bookmarks for web browsing, and anything else that might be useful to have.

I know this is slightly off-topic, and is a different idea to the original, but it was an idea i had as I thought about the possibility.

It would certainly make keeping definition files up to date a lot easier. Of course, it would take some changes in UBCD4WIN cd so that it would know to check there first before the net, and so that it could write newly downloaded definition files to the USB drive.

Also, i don't know how this works, but how about using the USB drive as additional "RAM", so that you can use UBCD4WIN on computers with only a small amount of system RAM?

What you are describing is already being developed & testing is nearly compleet.

It's called Josua's PreShell & does everything you mentioned & much more.
(with the execption of virus defs on the thumbdrive, but this has been brought up before,
so I would guess that it's already in the works, but not at the top of the list.)

Curently were working on ways to update just about everything every time you build the CD.

Hey, I read through this post, and noticed that no one mentioned the freely available USB Format Tool to format their USB Drives. The link I provided is a link to a copy of the utility found on Hiren's Boot Disk. WARNING: Use of Hiren's BootCD is illegal in the US and other countries. I say this in case anyone is curious about the using the CD.

The USB tool can be downloaded from many sites and IS COMPLETELY LEGAL. This is just the only site that I could think of that hosts this tool. I seem to remember reading somewhere that this tool was created by a specific company to use with their brand of USB drives, but didn't restrict the app to anything specific. IE brand, capacity, etc. It allows the user to select the format (FAT|FAT32|NTFS), and it doesn't have to be installed - that is, there is no (installshield wizard|et al) included. Just double-click to run. Oh, and uh, BE SURE YOU HAVE ONLY **ONE** USB STORAGE DRIVE INSERTED. (USB storage drive = USB flash drives, loaded card readers, etc.)

Last thing: For those IDE to CF adapters that were mentioned, I have seen references to www.mesanet.com for that.

I personally love my SanDisk Cruzer Titanium (512MB version) as it "slides" (and thus requires no cap), is nearly indescructible (up to 2000 lbs of pressure), glows blue when active or in use, and is extremely fast. Anyway, I haven't had a chance to test it though with the UBCD4Win, but I wouldn't see why it wouldn't work.

I have that pen drive... but I don't know if my bios supports booting form a usb drive.

What Bios setting do you have to change to get to boot form usb?

In your BIOS startup options, it will have a listing for USB Boot or it will not. Not all system (especially old systems) are capable of booting off of USB devices. Check your BIOS documents or manufacturer website to see if your BIOS supports USB Boot or not. A newer version of your BIOS may unlock that functionality but that is only a few systems that were in that time frame where it was being implemented and those that could not.

                          Well thanks.

If your hardware will allow booting from USB and you have software that will make your USB thumbdrive bootable... it should work as long as your hardware drivers are supported.

In otherwords... this relies on other things than UBCD4Win for it to work.

Thanks, fully understand the hardware needs to support. Was curious if there was any difference between the CD and USB as far as any installation parameters particular to UBCD4W
