Topics I've Started

  1. Imdisk Service Not Running - Problem Found

    Posted 8 Jan 2011

    I was using UBUSB yesterday and it was SO slick..

    Then today I started seeing "Failed to start service" popup dialogs. I looked in event viewer and found that IMDisk service was not able to find a file.

    Then I started retracing my steps, and realized I had cleaned up my desktop....

    The thing is, I downloaded UBUSB to my desktop and ran it, and it threw a bunch of files on the desktop. Last thing last night I moved all the files into a USUSB folder on the desktop.

    So I looked in regedit and sure enough, under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ ControlSet001\Services\ ImDisk\ImagePath was the path to my desktop...

    So for now, I just moved everything back (sigh). I'll figure out how to start over later..
  2. Superantispyware Portable Plugin

    Posted 8 Jan 2011

    Here is a plugin for SuperAntispyware Portable. It is designed to go in with the Cleanup Tools, which only run when the UBCD is NOT booted.

    Since SAS portable is downloaded as a random .com file, I start it with this cmd file (named RunSASPort.cmd):
    ECHO OFF
    for %%f in (..\SASPort\*.COM) do set RNDNAME=%%f
    START /WAIT %RNDNAME%

    Here is the code for SASPort.inf:
    ; SASPort.inf
    ; PE Builder v3 plug-in INF file for SuperAntiSpyware Portable
    ; Created by RobnJay 01/07/10
    ; http://www.ubcd4win.com

    [Version]
    Signature= "$Windows NT$"

    [PEBuilder]
    Name="Cleanup Tool: SAS Portable"
    Enable=1

    [WinntDirectories]

    a="Programs\SASPort"
    ,2

    [SourceDisksFiles]

    *.COM=a,,1
    *.CMD=a,,1

    [Append]
    nu2menu.xml, SASPort_nu2menu.xml

    Here is the code for SASPort_nu2menu.xml:
    <!-- Nu2Menu entry for SuperAntiSpyware Portable-->
    <NU2MENU>
      <MENU ID="Programs">

        <MITEM TYPE="POPUP" MENUID="Cleanup Tools">Cleanup Tools</MITEM>
      </MENU>
      <MENU ID="Cleanup Tools">
        <MITEM TYPE="ITEM" CMD="RUN" VISIBILITY="@Shl(@FileExists(@GetWinDir()\
    setupldr.bin),'1')"
     FUNC="@GetProgramDrive()\
    Programs\SASPort\
    RunSASPort.cmd">SuperAntiSpyware Portable</MITEM>
      </MENU>
    </NU2MENU>

    I am using this with a UBUSB4WIN build, so I can just replace the SAS_XXXX.com file on the flash drive to update it..

    So I didn't build an update tool for the builder (don't know how, anyway :))
    Also, I changed the ComboFix plugin so that it would copy a random named .exe to the user desktop instead of trying to run Combofix from the flash drive..

    Here's "RunRandom.cmd" for combofix:
    ECHO OFF
    for %%f in (..\Combofix\cOMBOFIX.
    EXE) do set OLDNAME=%%f
    for %%f in (%RANDOM%) do set FILENAME=CF%%f.EXE
    SET NEWNAME=%USERPROFILE%\
    DESKTOP\%FILENAME%
    :start
    cls
    ECHO Copy %OLDNAME% to %NEWNAME%?
    set /p userinp=Y(es)/C(ancel):
    if "%userinp%"=="
    Y" goto 1
    if "%userinp%"=="
    y" goto 1
    if "%userinp%"=="
    C" goto 3
    if "%userinp%"=="
    c" goto 3
    echo Invalid Choice - 'Y' or 'C' Only!
    goto start
    :1
    COPY %OLDNAME% "%NEWNAME%"
    ECHO PLEASE RUN
    ECHO %FILENAME%
    ECHO FROM YOUR DESKTOP
    PAUSE
    GOTO END
    :3
    REM stuff
    echo.
    echo "Cancelled...."
    pause
    goto end
    REM etc.
    :end

    Also - the UBUSB build (which is AWESOME) creates a boot volume that won't allow the "Autorun.inf" file to execute as it does on a CD. Is this because it is seen by your OS as a HDD?

    Does anyone know of a workaround so that the nu2menu Start button gets created when you plug in the flash drive (right-click>Autoplay doesn't work either).

    For now I guess I will Manually add a cmd file to run the menu at the root of the flash drive, and double click it.

    If you make 2 copies of your USUSB flash drive, you can then boot one, and clone from the other to a 3rd to make copies - very cool, indeed..
