  1. CD Drive/Disc tester

    Posted 14 Feb 2007

I've had this need for a very long time... An easy, thorough way to test a CD/DVD drive. The methods I've seen include some test program, and a disk to read. But what disk to read? I think that UBCD4WIN would be the perfect place to put a program that reads the CD, and verifies that everything it reads is good.

I'm sure someone will point out that if you can boot to UBCD4Win, the drive works. However, a completely dead drive is easy to diagnose. CD/DVD Drives often fail in a way where the optical will stick at a certain point, meaning it can read the beginning of the disk, but may have partial and/or intermittent issues on other sections of the disk. A program that can read the disk over and over, and maybe verify a predetermined checksum, would be very helpful. As a bonus, it could double as a test for the disk itself, not just the drive. You can tell when it's too scratched, and it's time to burn a new UBCD4WIN. It would also be a good test to have on a computer where even UBCD acts funny. Is it the Memory? CPU? MB? Or is it either a bad disk or drive?

Is this something that can be added?
