Building Ubcd4Win On W7
Posted 14 Oct 2009
Hi all!
Just for your knowledge. Nothing really new, but curious:
I have built an UBCD4Win ISO, making trials on a recently installed Windows 7. Testing the ISO with qemu, resulted succesfull... Of course the ISO was based on a SP3 version of Windows XP
Not bad, though that I do not intend to boot W7 from UBCD4Win, but just to have a tool to recover some files if needed, or to boot with Freedos and then to use ghost to replace the existing W7 OS with a backup copy...

Plugins in Version 3.50
Posted 12 Jul 2009
I have updated recently to v 3.50. The software collection of this version is impresive!
I choosed Firefox as an application to be included in the CD building, by using the plugins menu of UBCD4Win PE Builder. The CD ran fine, but I could not make Firefox to run. It crashed every time when I started it. So I choosed to include Opera instead, in an other CD building. I saved about 20 Mb, but I would prefer to have Firefox.
On the other hand I saw that, during the CD ISO image building, a CMD started and the '/minint' and '/programs' directories were copied to the partition C: of the HD. I though that the plugin was designed to enable the CD to install UBCD4Win into an HD, in a later operation, when running Windows from the CD.
I do not know if someone else has experienced the same thing. I do not know if this is correct or not. Perhaps the function of plugins setup in the CD building operation needs more online help
Regards.

A *new* way to make BIG disc bootable with UBCD4Win
Posted 8 Apr 2009
First of all I beg your understanding if I say something already investigated. But I feel very happy because I made bootable, with UBCD4Win, an 80 Gb USB HD, by chance, without re-formatting it neither losing any files (I had about 60 Gb of files in and still remain there after the happening).
I wanted to boot a 2 Gb pendrive and prepared it by means of the plugin included in !critical folder.
In some part of the operation I copied ntldr and rcldr files in the root of my 80 Gb NTFS formatted USB HD. When I restarted the computer to test the booting of the pendrive, the 80 Gb disc
remained plugged. I got an error telling that some files were missing preventing Windows to boot. When I restarted Windows to see how to solve the problem all the files in the pendrive were there. So I though that it was something related to the 80 Gb HD. But this gave me an idea on how to make the 80 Gb disc bootable. I ran the utility taken from Slax to make a USB disk bootable (BOOTINST.BAT) and applied it to the 80 Gb HD. Then I just copied the files from the 2 Gb bootable pendrive to the root of the 80 Gb HD. It was like magic... I got as a result that the 80 Gb HD was able to boot the UBCD4Win formerly written to the 2 Gb pendrive.
To be sure of the result I have made two things,
-To extract my internal hard disc in the computer and boot with the 80 Gb HD= OK
-To format another 2 Gb pendrive to NTFS (with Linux, because Windows does not make it easy), and then following the same procedure written before. = OK
If I am right we may take profit of the result in two ways,
-To make bootable big USB HDs,
-To make easy the process to clone bootable pendrives, with the advantage of having NTFS filesystem.
I think I can write a method the next days, after performing more trials.
Comments are welcome.
