When runnig AVG from with the UBCD4win it will sometimes close in the middle of a scan. It does not clean anything and It doesn't give me a results page. AVG just goes back to the screen that lets you choose what to scan. Any thoughts would be appreciated combust.gif

This happens with Kaspersky on occasion. I've tried to figure out what causes it but have come up empty handed so far. It seems to be hardware specific? Seems that KAV and AVG both have the same type of problem on some systems but then on a majority they work fine.

All of the antivirus and antispyware utils need to use space on the ram drive ( drive B: ) ... to run AVG, the program alone will need about 44 Mb of space and if you update it... another 20+ Mb... now add to that more space if you also choose to place the temp files for the quarentine on the drive and you can see you can use up a lot of space pretty quickly...

So.. first see how much space you actually have on the ram drive and make sure it is over the space requirements mentioned... if you are going to quarantine items, I suggest that if possible to save them to the C: drive as apposed to the B: drive to help save space.

I don't think I am very comfortable quarantining the infected items to the physical hard drive, but you make a good point about the ram drive size. Do you have any idea how to resize of the ram drive?

I haven't used the kaspersky from the UBCD. I don't doubt that it is hardware, but I'll go for a week without it happening and all of the sudden I will get a couple of different machines doing it.

thx

Quarantining the infected items to the physical hard drive poses no threat at all, the files are no longer in a state that can be run and once finished later you can always remove them...

Another good reason to do that is when a malware has embedded itself into the system so much that when its removed, it makes the system unusable... at that point other steps may need taken and if you've quarantined them to the drive... then the info that the virus vault has can be of use to do further research into finding a final solution.

Just a bit more info about saving the quarantine files to the drive... or one reason you may not actually want to....

If you have to recover corrupted or deleted files on the drive... do that before saving or writing any files to the drive to increase your chances of recovery.

Thx for the tips, it hasn't happened in a while. I am not too worried about it, if it happens i usually just pull the drive and scan it on another machine.
