Full Version: Network problem:"can't acquire ip address"

I need to transfer files from a suspect hd to another computer via a network. I can boot up fine and see the files (I must say I'm in awe of how well this works)-but am having a problem getting the ubcd computer to show up on the networked computer. I tried it using the integrated wireless and a wired connection in the ubcd computer, and configured the ubcd computer to the same workgroup and computer name that worked previously, with file sharing enabled. But the message I get is that the "ip address can't be acquired." After a few attempts, "bpe1461(?)" showed up as a network location on the other computer but couldn't be accessed. "BPE1461" was the name of the ubcd computer that showed up in the network cfg before I renamed it to match what it used to be on the network
Can someone with a lot of patience explain in layman's terms how this can be fixed? I found some relevant topics here, mostly by posters far more expert than I, which left me somewhat confused.
I am about to buy an external hd-if the concensus is that's a better way to go, I'll just hold off till I have it.
The ubcd machine is a Dell laptop (Inspiron 1150) with WXPHome, and the networked one is running W98SE.

Ok.. UBCD is a DOS base boot CD... this is the forum for UBCD4Win... I assume you mean the latter?

Now... Assuming you did mean UBCD4Win...

Rebuild the CD but before you do... from the UBCD4WinBuilder select the Plugins button and then scroll down to... "Network: PENETCFG: (PE Network configurator) - CONFIG TO CUSTOMIZE NETWORK SETTINGS" ... click the Config button and you will be presented with a util to configure your network settings for the build... setup the proper Workgroup... set the path to the shared location on the other networked system... enable file sharing ... input a proper username password for the connection.. etc. When done, build and burn the CD again.

I do prefer the wired connection over the wireless one... its easier as well as usually faster and I believe its a more reliable one. If you aren't having problems using wireless it certainly is up to you.

I also highly recommend that you still consider the external drive still even if you are able to get the network connection working... because it will allow you to backup your systems easily. A backup is nothing to be overlooked... in the event that a drive corruption or failure happens you will thank yourself over an over... So do get a backup drive... if you do and you actually use it... you won't have to worry near as much in the event of a failure.

Yes, sorry meant ubcd4win.
Thank you for the guidance on the networking issue. The problem I have with building a new cd is limited access to an appropriate machine-everything here is running W98SE. I borrowed one for this build but my friend ran out of beer about half way through and I don't think he wants to see me for a few days!

What I don't get is why the PE network configurator shows up in the tools, if you can't use it to configure a network? It looks like you can change names/paths within the program and the needed drivers are present (SMC router).

After this nightmare, I'm definitely getting an external drive. Will I be able to dump off the files to that without building a new cd?

You can use PENetCfg to do the same as what the utility I mentioned does, the util itself just seems easier for users to understand.

If you get an external USB drive... plug it in before you boot the CD and in most cases you can use it without any additional steps.
