Full Version: Multiple Instances of Same Menu Folder on 'Start Menu'

Hello everyone,

Complete newbie to this BartPE/UBCD4W thing. So, spent a whole night making this first UBCD4W system and installed the result to HDD. Reboot and, great, it works!

Click on the Start Menu inside the now active UBCD Win system and find listed (for example):

Application
Application
Application
Application

Network
Network
Network
Network

... and so on for 'Network' folder etc. Like the Start Menu/Programs is a mile long sort of thing.

If I goto any folder and let the menu slide out it seems to be the case that each instance of 'Application' folder just duplicates the list of application shortcuts in any other instance of 'Application' folder. (Hope I've explained that well enough to make sense.)

So what am I or the UBCD4W (I didn't tamper with anything, honest! I wouldn't know where to start) doing wrong? How do I get rid of this? At a glance my guess is that there are as many folders per title as there are shortcuts to applications that the folder would contain. Like, say, 10 apps in the folder = 10 instances of the containing folder.

Other than that have to say I am impressed by what it does.

Hi, there
I have never installed the project to hdd.

But.. (you did not recieve any error messages?)
the most common reasons for this type of error to occur are:
-the user added a plugin containing an error in either the plugin's .inf (telling the program to add the menu item, or the nu2menu.xml file
-the other one is that the user did not choose to create an .iso-file
the creation of the .iso is preceeded by a sorting of the menu (remember to choose this option in the builder)
so...rebuild and this time choose to build .iso (and the menu will be sorted)

have a look in the builder.log look for mentioning of errors

then report back

Thanks bengt,

No there were no 'Errors' or 'Warnings' reported at the dialogue at end of the build process. Being a newbie I paid a lot of attention to that. I have now checked the log and that also has no content mentioning error.

I did try installing other plugins '(Terabyte) Image for Windows' and '(Terabyte) Image View' both of these installed successfully. I also tried to install a plugin for an Intel Wireless 2915ABG card. That did not install successfully, or maybe it did but there is some other reason why I can't get wireless to work.

All of the above I did for the 'system' that was produced that contained the problem in my initial post.

I left that system as was and tried your advice to make an iso first. Did that, then had 'peinst' write the 'system' to my HDD. Worked fine - the menu issue was cleared. (Though notice two instances of 'Regional and Language Options' which were there previously but seem not to be cleared up - not a problem for me I think and wasn't the specific problem I was writing about anyway.) So thank you very much for the fix.

After doing that I noticed that in the 'UBCD4Win\drivers' folder there were already drivers for the Intel 2915ABG card so I deleted what I had put in the plugins folder myself and rebuilt in hope that this would give access to wireless. Unfortunately not. Any suggestions on issues concerning wireless that I should be aware of would be appreciated though I'll also try reading around in a while. Should say all of this it the reason that I'm writing it on to HDD - so I can get issues sorted out without landing with a pile of coasters because what is being built isn't quite what I'd like on a final CD. Think the write to HDD is a very good feature for testing.

I have three other general questions for now though:

1. Does anyone know of a plugin for current version of OpenOffice.org current version 2.4 (I think)? If not for the whole suite at least for OO.o Writer. I've had a look on the net but only see one for v1.1.1 (which I think wouldn't even open the odt docs that OO.o produces now.

2. While I was messing around looking at the driver folder I noticed that there are masses of stuff that I don't need. All I need is some of the Intel stuff. Is it okay to just delete what isn't need (so that it isn't included in the build)? Come to that is it fairly safe to delete anything that is thought not likely to need?

3. At the time of booting into the UBCD4Win system there is a dialogue that turns up asking what shell to use. It has, I think, a 5 second time-out for making selection. Either I'm hopelessly slow or that 5 seconds is tremendously fast 'cause I never even get to the down arrow button before time-out is up and I can't (I think) try the different shells - I seem always to land on the same desktop. Is there any way to extend the time-out? What file would I need to edit to extend it?

Many thanks.

I have been back and forth through the files and get the same result of Multiple Instances of Same menus.

I have cleaned up all errors, but still there is this issue.

I know when I used the same plug-ins when I actively built the boot disks with BartPE, I didnt get these, but now using this for the first time, I am.

I dont write to the hard drive, but to a ISO file.

Any suggestions on what to look for if no errors are showing?

One question in this directory c:\UBCD4Win\plugin\!Critical\Localize-V313\english\files\plugin is a bunch of the nu2menu files, plus they are in each plugin directory. is there a reason that these are here as well? Should they be in 2 places, here and where the plug-in is at?

Thanks,

Rob

To understand how a plugin is made and laid out... read the help files that are included. You can find them in the [UBCD4Win]\help\[your language] folder. It is normal that each plugin has its own XML file that is later added to the nu2menu.xml file IF that plugin is enabled... if it isn't enabled, then it won't get added.

Remove ( or disable ) the plugin's that you have added to the project... its one of those that is causing your doubling of the menu items and isn't properly setup to work with the UBCD4Win menu structure that is being used. I'd also suggest that you use one of the many vitual machines to pre-test your builds you make with so you don't use up a lot of disks just testing.

Well,

Here is what I did, I first did a new install, the menu was fine on first go around.

Then I updated each spyware and virus, only adding the plugins that came in the archive.

Well, one of those appears to be the problem, I have yet to add my plugins into the system.

I will see if I can track down which one of the many I updated (I only use the config) and if I recall, 2 were labeled as no till I updated them.

I will back track and check again. wink.gif

Question, when adding a plugin, do you just place the nu2menu.xml file with the plugin, or do you add it to the C:\UBCD4Win\plugin\!Critical\Localize-V313\english\files\plugin ?

I noticed some of the xml files in here as well am not sure why they are.

Thanks Joshua.....long time since I sent you a message....when I was very active in BartPE.

Finally got the menus working correctly, I see how things have changed since then.

Thank you again!

Hi Rob,

I'm having the same problem. What did you do to get them working properly?

Rowland,

One of the things I did was make sure I use the localize that is already built into the cd, you just have to configure it in the plugins.

Also, I my original plug-ins I used in BartPE, the menus had to be fixed up so they matched now, before you didnt need as much details. So. if you have older plug-ins, check the XML file to make sure they look like the newer xml files in the way they use the menus.

Hope this helps,

Rob
