That`s what I have done:
1. installed windows on hd 0
2. plug in a second hd, started gparted and created a partition and activated it (boot flag)
3. booted with ubcd4win and did copy all from the old hd to the new hd
4. used the fixmbr tool from ubcd4win

Now the copy of windows is starting but it hangs before the login screen. Also save booting hangs at the same point.

I am not looking for some cloning tool but I need to understand what going on.

What do you mean by copy?

Did you simply copy one drive to another using explorer?

Did you try using this software?
DriveImage XML Hard drive backup and cloning

Easeus Drive Copy
Or download and try this.

However if you have seagate/maxtor drive use this Seagate Discwizard it's a special version of Acronis True Image, which is probably the best cloning software around.

There is even a bartpe plugin for it as well in the download.

First, it's not recommened cloning that way. E.g. NTFS permissions are not set correctly.

If need be, cloning is possible that way. You don't need gparted and fixmbr.
Boot ubcd4win, use disk manager, partition and set active.
Apply drive letter. Run explorer, format drive and copy files.

Most likely userinit error.

Did you booted windows and both drives were connected?
Windows store drive letter assocination and userinit is not found.

Cause and solution:

Unable to log on if the boot partition drive letter has changed http://support.microsoft.com/kb/249321/

No. The old harddrive was not attached.

No. The old harddrive was not attached.

Yes, should work in most cases. Letter C: assumed for source and clone.

Which drive letter uses source windows?
Which drive letter uses cloned windows?

Anyway try remove path before userinit.exe. KB249321 section 3
Boot UBCD4Win and load registry (cloned windows)\system32\config\software.

When I start from ubcd4win and have just the new hd attached then the new hd looks like C:.

Before copying old hd was c: and new hd was d:. But d: was never booted before the old hd wasn`t removed.

I will try this....
