I'm a bit of a newb when it comes to Wi-Fi networks as i have always had wired networks. But i am getting a wireless card because my buddies and i are going to have a wireless network in our appt. in June.

Anyhow... one of my future roommates has a LinkSys Router that has WPA-PSK after he upgraded the firmware in it. Where i get confused is the only security that most wi-fi OEMs advertise is WEP (which is not what i want), including Linksys's advertising of this router. Are all, or most, wi-fi cards and routers compatabile with WPA-SPK after upgrade? or do they come with WEP on by default and you have to turn on and setup WPA-PSK?

thanks smile.gif

It really depends on the router or access point. I just bought a router (which had a feature to turn it into an access point, which is what I needed), PCI card, and PCMCIA card a few weeks ago and they include both. Staples had an awesome sale so I had to buy one of each. I've been wanting to anyways for testing with this project, but the sale and a little extra cash in my pocket helped out.

So really it depends on the features the hardware has. Mine came default, but I'm sure most will also include the ability to do an update on the firmware for these capabilities. Just gotta research the hardware.

@Steel --- yea, you're probaly right. and the wireless card im getting is from LinkSys as well so im hoping it has that capability. if its routers do im guessing (read: hoping) that its wi-fi cards will to

@slckfty -- haha.. yep.. i'll definetly do some testing for The Project once i get it up and installed. Right now im on a different wi-fi network than what i will be on in June with the new apt. This one is a D-Link router with WEP encryption only so we'll see how it goes

Thx guys smile.gif

My Linksys WUSB11 ver.2.6 device loads - just no network. I just started working on it and I'm having no luck. I could not see where I need to enter the SSID and channel info. I'm sure it's a pluggin I need from reading http://www.911cd.net/forums/

All in good time smile.gif
