Full Version: USB FLASH DRIVES AND IMG FILES?

HI,

I know this is a bit lofty for a first post, but please bear with me smile.gif

I have been using the ubcd for quite some time and genuinely like it. Now my question revolves around the img files, which are basically diskette image files correct?

What I would like to do, is boot from my USB Flash drive, this works fine.
I need to load a menu from the flash drive, then select any on of a number of img files and boot that directly from the usb drive. Is this possible? has anyone done it?

I have tried, everything looked great, until I actually tried to load the img file, it would seem the linux program made to load img files into memory is not designed to load from usb flash drives at all. It gives a garbled screen and hangs.

Please, any suggestions are welcome smile.gif

Techs around the world wll thanks you, as its worth a lot for us to have all our various diskette images on a single bootable drive smile.gif

Hmmm, that is quite a good idea. Hopefully someone here will have an answer for you. I honestly have not played with your idea very much and currently do not have time to help research it for you. Maybe I will in the next couple of days?? I don't know I have a lot of work to do with this project but I will at least think about it and maybe check out a few sites and software. Good thought, hopefully we can help figure out how to accomplish this!!

Thanks for the question but for one thing, it's the wrong question in the wrong section of the forums. Most of this forum is about the Windows UBCD, something completely different (and better) than the UBCD. Please take a look at the FAQ to see what I mean. I will be moving this topic to the correct section of the forums for UBCD and AutoPatcher discussion only. (sorry, I didn't want to seem mean in what I said above if I was)

As for your question, I too have not messed with booting things from USB drives very much though I've heard it can be done. I'm not sure how well it can be done with the UBCD, but hopefully someone can test and will respond. Thanks for visiting the forums and I hope the WinUBCD is a great help for you!

Hi,

Thanks for the link.

I checked it out tonight, and it does have accurate information, but this will only allow you to boot from 1 disk image. What I was interested in is a menu system and many boot disk images, similar to the method used by the ultimate boot cd project. They use a linux based imb booting utility, it lets you throw as many img files as you want on a single disk, then menu to the one you want, and booting it.
the only problem with their method is that the code used to boot the img file into ram does not like usb flash drive.

Hi search this topics here http://www.911cd.net/forums/index.php?show...last_post&st=15
it may give you some clues how to do it, but this is for bootable CD's.

Where you using syslinux? I've gotten that to work before w/ a USB flash drive and loading images with memdisk.

Cheers
