UNASSIGNED PROGRAMS File Management - Copy Handler
Linux Utilities - R-Linux
This list was generated from the original menu of 2.41 programs. I have pushed the ones I'm fairly certain off under the catergory menus. The unassigned progs, are shown in the menu structure of 2.41 (so these need to be placed within the new structure above).
LittlBUGer I hope I've not stepped on your toes, I know you were producing a list of progs. I know your a busy man so hopefully saved you time and not wasted it ?

Yes, thanks for doing that as I haven't even had time yet to get something going. What I would suggest though, if Steel doesn't have a problem with this, is if we really can't find a place to put those unassigned ones (say they just don't fit into the other categories), then maybe we need a whole new category called Misc. for apps like that. Just a suggestion though and thanks for all of your work.

After saying that, here's some thing I noticed:
X-Setup Pro should go under
Registry Tools Remote Desktop Connection should go under
Network ToolsScribe should go under
ApplicationsFileZilla should go under
Network ToolsExplore2fs should go under
File Management-ExplorersAnd so on and so forth... They seem kind of obvious to me.
Just my 2 cents...
Batfink
Feb 22 2005, 03:03 PM
Must of them will fit but some of them I'm not sure what they do ! (And didn't have time to test)
So I've left them at the bottom so people can see the unassigned ones and suggest where to place them within the menu structure, if we still have some awkard ones we can amend the structure (Hopefully this will not be nessary).
Once we have a few suggestions of placements I'll post a new list up so people can see the work in progress.
Hopefully this is ok with Steel and everyone ?
*** Edit ****
I've amended the first list with your suggestions above LittlBUGer, and yeah they were obvious lol, just couldn't see the wood for trees

Good list. Hopefully I will have more time later tonight to offer more feedback. I'm trying to wrap up a lot of stuff this afternoon, I go back to work tomorrow morning!
One quick comment though, I would like to keep the "accessories" group for the 3 items that are actually from XP. You currently have them in "applications". Just a thought, that they should probably stay there so everyone realizes they are the XP applications.

Good point Steel,
Would it be better to have a submenu though under Applications -> Accessories, that way the root menu would not be too long, and still have the programs listed as in xp?

I'm going to edit the first post soon to put some of the unassigned ones in their proper place. I will note next to each one that I moved them there, in case my throughts weren't justified. Thanks.

After moving stuff, I'm still thinking we need a "General" or "Misc." category...

Thanks LittlBUGer, changes look good. Except I would place the mem test in Stress Test & Benchmark Tools as it stresses the memory ?.

I'm in the school of thought that if the categories are right in the first place, then we shouldn't need a misc category , maybe thats the librarian in me trying to get out ?
Can someone offer suggestions on these :-
File Management - Copy Handler
No Idea what this is ??File Management - HD Cleaner -
No idea what this is ??File Management - WinDir Stat -
- Directory info, perhaps File Management Explorer?Linux Utilities - R-Linux -
No idea what this is ??Recovery Tools - Floppy Repair -

@Batfink & lawson23Just wanted to acknowledge your work with the menu structure and the "Windows vs PE" autorun menu ideas from another thread. As something of a menu freak myself, I appreciate all your ideas and work.
Just a word or two about the "Windows vs PE" autorun menu... I'm a proponent of separate menus that are geared toward each environment. A while back, I went through my list of apps for my personal PE build, and constructed a menu for the Windows environment that only shows apps which
will run or should
only be run from Windows (e.g. ERUNT, some system PW apps, etc.). Apps which should
not be run from PE were removed from the standard nu2menu.
An easy way to accomplish this (for the Windows nu2menu environment) is to merely construct a menu by hand (easiest way is probably take the final nu2menu.xml that PE Builder makes and then cut/copy/paste until you have it looking perfect). Make a
new plugin (name of your choice, but we'll use WinNu2menu), and place your "Windows" xml file along with nu2menu.exe in the plugin folder. Modify the autorun.inf in the nu2menu folder to
open=Programs\WinNu2menu\nu2menu.exe. Now, when the CD is placed in the tray while Windows is running, a customized menu with
only apps that will work from Windows or PE will show - nothing else. When booted from CD, the normal UBCD4Win menu will show, but will contain only apps that will in fact, work from within PE.
I'm back in the bushes...

I don't know what this project would do with out the wisdom and experience from OUR old man.

Priceless as always!!
I'm a bit tired and depressed (because my vacation is hours away from being over) so I must ask, would this be an easy addon to the project? Sounds like we could do this but, since my brain is only 1% functional at the moment, I must ask this.
LittlBUGer
Feb 22 2005, 10:32 PM
I think it would be great if we could do it like DigiWiz proposed.
@Batfink
I put MemTest under Diagnostics as because it does stress the RAM, it's for diagnostical purposes, so it could go either way. I'll move those other ones though...

...so I must ask, would this be an easy addon to the project?

Easy doesn't begin to describe it

Adding it is piece of cake - the hard work involves someone (some folks) going through each and every app and testing to see if it runs OK from the CD while in XP , or conversely, tesing each and every app from within PE and noting those that don't work 100% - but it looks like we have a number of talented folks willing to donate their time and expertise to tackle these issues.
I suppose those who would want to try their hand at this could submit their
xml files to me or Steel for testing, and once everyone's satisfied that it's working as intended, I'll write a quick plugin (actually, it's already written), and distrubute it as an add-on - which would really only involve adding a folder and files to the plugin folder.

I think the linux tools need to stay together as they are in the present menu, separating them I think is a mistake.
If we can have 2 menu structures that would be great
Batfink

Two menus sounds like the ideal answer, is it possible digiwiz to move the start button on the cd to a different location when running from within windows (So it does not clash with the hosts)

We need another category, perhaps called Linux Lools, and move explore2fs from file explorer to this aswell as the last unassigned linux tool.

Copy Handler is a file copier which trys to optimise file copying speed, it's very useful it you need to copy large amounts of data.
Run it on your PC and have a play around with it, as it doesn't require installing.

I was reading the other thread and briefly through this one and some people were asking about adding files to the disk but not having them in the menu. I did not see anybody else cover this so I'll chime in. The latest version of nu2menu does allow for hidden menu entries and can be used easily to have menu entries only show up in windows or on the pe disk in case you guys did not know that.
I was planning on doing that with my menus also but have switched to working using blackbox for my shell since geo kind of messes up sometimes. so I'm going to go back through my menu entries for that first then go back and clean up mu nu2menu entries to show up under windows or pe correctly.

Are we there yet ?
For dual menus we need to mark each one as being capable of running from UBCD4WIN, WINDOWS or BOTH. {U/W/B}
AND
If we are to implement the beta menu idea were going to need the status of each program. IE No Problems or working with issues {NP,!}

I would argue that disk investigator needs to be under recovery rather than diagnostic as it's a file recovery program.
I would also say that TestDisk should be under partition along side mbrfix and wizard rather than diagnostic.

steel would you like me to update the XML files? I can do this very easily for you. Your choice. What I can't do is the seperation of the menus. But I could post the XML zip and allow Digiwiz to work on the next version. Those apps need to be defined before we move to that point anyways.

Forget Drive Snapshot.
I think I know what happened there. I didn't follow the dir. when building my 2.41 test ISO that I use for comparing.
What I didn't follow was the DELETE THE PLUGIN DIR before writing the 2.4 and 2.41 files.
This just affects my iso build and was confusing me when it came to looking at the modified version. So please disregard DriveSnapshot.

Just checked it out, great work lawson.
A couple of things :-
The menus have lost the & sign, ie in Backup & Cloning its Backup Cloning
The Shell tools only has BGINFO in it, which is no use as a tool so can we remove it from the menu in UBCD4WIN (as its loaded at startup) ?
How do I change the position in the menu for plugins I've added. (As I would like these to conform to the new menu structure). Which file needs a changing ?
Thanks again, great work.

We still didn't discuss Ultrareader.
What is this app that is a plugin but doesn't display a menu option?
Should it be in the menu and list of tools?
___________________________________________________________
What about the Cisco VPN install? As we usually don't enable this plugin it still is a tool available. This should maybe noted in the List of tools also. Tools that are not enabled automatically have a NOTE mark for them. Or some indicator. I will leave that to Steel.
__________________________________________________________
Also what about Shell Features? Keep it in the list so that it is on the list of tools but what about the MENU?
___________________________________________________________
Also on another note. Some of the names of the apps have been changed in the current list. I didn't modify this in the XML files. We need to decide what to do in this situation. Either we keep the original name or we modify them to what we want them to say. I think we are getting into a lot of work doing this. An example of this is:
MENU - "WD WinDlg" - Original Name
LIST - "WD Windiag"

Batfink as for you questions.
First thank you secondly you are correct in the & stand I noticed that and forgot to mention it. We may want to look at something else since the & isn't showing in the menu.
How do you change the position in the menu. You need to edit the XML files for your plugins (usually - XXX_nu2menu.xml) and add them to either a current menu or you create a new menu (nu2menu.xml) and add them to that. As far as the position (pdfreader first then K-melon) I'm not completely sure on this one. I have an idea but don't want to post something that wouldn't work. If this is important to you PM me and I will further investigate my idea of how.

Has a decision been made on what to do about the & sign?
Is there a way to fix this? Or a different character? Maybe we should change all of them to "and". Steel is getting ready to release a new version of the MENU and it would be nice to have this cleared up.
Steel your thoughts?

There is a very easy fix for the "&" sign and have it show up in the menus.
Instead of one & sign, replace each instance with two & signs and all is fixed.
Example: Backup & Cloning should be
Backup && CloningThis will fix your problem.
Your other alternative is to use a forward-slash
Backup/Cloning which is a legal command.
Hope that helps.

TestDisk???
I finally had a play with testdisk for real yesterday I think we may have it in the wrong category or it may need a dual entry.
One in the partition section the other in file recovery.
It seems to me that TestDisk is a very powerful piece of data recovery software, which the average user may not realise, whether the average user has the skills needed to effectively use it is another matter.
