I hope this is not a question which has come up for thousand times, but ..

can I also make a UBCD for Windows98SE?

As far as I understood the instructions are for WinXP.
stidyup
Hi ldej24

If your asking can you use the a Win98 SE Setup CD to make the ubcd4win, I'm afraid you can't. To make this CD you need a WinXP installation CD with SP1/SP2 integrated into it or Win 2003.

Windows XP CD, with at least Service Pack 1

This is a requirement for Bart's PEĀ©. If your XP CD does not include SP1/SP2 (which some/most don't) you have to slipstream SP1/SP2 to your XP CD

If your question is can I build ubcd4win on win98 SE yes you can but it appears to be a hit and miss process as to whether it successfully builds a working ubcd4win.

If you haven't got a WinXP CD and you need a rescue CD I would suggest using the original Ultimate BootCD here which doesn't require any building at all as it's a complete ISO and has all the tools you'll ever need to rescue Win98.

Thanks.

Did I got confused by what I read on the Ultimate Boot CD site?
" For those of you interested in a Windows version of the Ultimate Boot CD, you might want to check out this project initiated by Ben Burrows. "
stidyup
Yes and no smile.gif

Perhaps it might offer more clarity if it said a windows version based on WinXP.

How it's phrased may mislead people into thinking any windows cd can build this project when it's only a WinXP SP1 or higher.
ldej24
I see. So you suggest that I should download the UBCD.
Thanks very much for your advice.
stidyup
I'm afraid if you only have a copy of Win98 SE then I'm afraid the original ubcd is your only option, unless you want to upgrade to XP.

Yes, as stidyup said, you must use a XP CD to BUILD the CD but after you build it, you can USE the CD on just about any system. Otherwise, the UBCD is your only option.

On a side note, why are you still on Win 98? XP is a HUGE upgrade and WAY better. smile.gif

Last things first:
I had a duable boot for some time, but stopped using XP.
Reasons: 1. esthetics, 2. used to Win98, 3. I could not figure out how to fiddle around in MS-DOS under XP, and I have still some nice good old MS-DOS programmes.

More serious:
I have made the download, and unzipped. So I have the .ISO file.
Now I think I have to burn a bootable Win98SE disk. Correct? How do I do this?
And then, just write the ISO-file on the CD?

Sorry if I raised some of your hairs because of still living in the past.

Ok, I'm going to assume you're refering to the Original Ultimate Boot CD (http://www.ultimatebootcd.com). If that is the case you just need to burn the ISO to a CD. Nero is recommended around here.

The Ultimate Boot CD is bootable, so after you burn the ISO to a CD you should just have to put the CD in and boot.

Please check out here for more information on this CD.

A quick solution to burning the ISO is to download small cd writer from here

Extract the zip file, run smallcd writer.
Disc
Record ISO image

You will then have a bootable cd. If you can see a *.iso file on the CD you've done it wrong, you should see a complete folder structure.
LittlBUGer
Yes, just burn the ISO (CD image) to a CD. In Nero, it would be Recorder -> Burn Image... smile.gif

Very sorry, but I did not succeed in making a bootable CD.
I have now a CD with the various folders and the files autorun, ubcd and boot.catalog.
When I start the computer, after having set in the BIOS start from CD-ROM,
I get the message, Searching for bootrecord from CD-ROM: not found.

Any idea what went wrong/I did wrong?

Try booting the CD from a floppy. See FAQ5 and download the boot floppy and see if this works for you, on many occasions I've managed to get a PC to boot from CD with this tool.

It could be that the CD you have burnt is corrupt.

I followed your advise and made a bootmanager diskette. Yes, this works. I can now boot from the CD. Thanks very much!!

As far the CD, I tried several and as I can burn/write data on it, it seems not to be corrupt.
I still would like to make a bootable CD. So, please, how do I make a bootable CD?
stidyup
I think your problem is mostly like that your CD-Rom doesn't support booting from CD, the only way to solve this is to buy a new CD-Rom.

It could also be down to your mobo but I think it will be the CD-Rom that's the problem.

Is there a way how to find this out? Should it say so in the product description?
The CD/RW is a Philips PCRW5232P, and the CD-ROM 40Xmax by ASUS.
Do I need perhaps a special driver?
Arctic Wolf
I don't believe I've ever seen a CD-ROM drive that said if it was bootable or not. Are you burning to a CD-RW? If so, I would try a CD-R and it might work better.
stidyup
You seem to have a pretty new cd-roms so they should work.

At work I've sometimes had to use the boot floppy on new cd-roms, some just don't like booting of a cd-rw from some reason.
LittlBUGer
What program did you use to burn the ISO to the CD and how did you do it? What kind (brand) of CDs are you using? There's got to be an explanation somewhere... smile.gif
