Full Version: App Running Location?
UBCD4Win Forums > Just for fun > Vault > New menu structure

It has been discussed to note which apps should be run where. This topic is for that information.

Once the list is complete Steel will make a final decision on if this is something he wants to pursue.

NTRegopt can't be used within the PE environment as it will simply try to optimise the registry on the boot cd, but it can be run from the ubcd4win cd (running on top of the OS).

HijackThis is pointless within the PE environment as it will simply scan the processes running on the ubcd4win cd, but again it can be run from the ubcd4win cd whilst the OS is loaded. HijackThis is a tool which can only be used with the infected PC's OS running so it can scan what files/processes/reg entries are in use. You can use this information to clean the PC if you know what you are doing or post the log on one of the security forums.

CWShredder?? (Personally I think this should really only be run in windows)

I think everything else works fine in the PE environment.

Sorry guys!! Been quite busy the last few days, will the madness ever end??

Anyways, I've updated a few things on the site. I took the list in this post and restructured the listing on the site. I hope to have the time to create a "beta" version of the project for everyone to test soon, with the new structure. Just to make sure everything works for everyone! I think it will probably be a FULL download just to make sure there is no possible way for people to make mistakes when checking it out. I also have all the fixes in place in my build and a few of the new suggestions added. It will be an unoffical prerelease. I have a lot of things planned for the next version of the project so I want to make sure the new menu is complete and works properly. I don't want to have to release a 2.51 or 2.52 version after 2.5 is released. <_<

So please check out the site and give me any feedback, I will be uploading the page in about an hour so please wait a little while.

I hope to release the "beta" by next Tuesday at the latest. I've still got a lot of emails to reply to (as always), busy work schedule, and a lot to change!

I totally understand your thoughts on this but I also look at the Menu as a work in progress. What we can do is test the new version and make sure it fits with what is defined now.
Let me say: I would not expect you to release a new version of the project just because a request is made to change something in the menu structure. I think these changes should wait until you actually have a reason (of course you make these decisions) to release a new release.

I actually don't think you need to make a new release now if it is only because of the menu.

Like I said though the menu and list of tools is a work in progress in my eyes. New apps will be added and changes may be suggested on a daily basis. It is your decision whether or not to implement the suggestions and when to implement.
SteelTrepid
I didn't get all the editing done, I am uploading the new "contents" page in a few minutes. I got down to Malware Tools, I will hopefully get the rest done tonight.

As for a new version, it is simple for me to just zip my files and upload them to the server. I am always testing my files and checking out new software. It's really not too big of a deal to just quickly release a "beta" letting everyone know it will probably contain errors or have problems.
lawson23
Maybe having a beta version available would be helpful to you anyways.

This would allow some of us that have nothing better to do test for you and submit problems to a post on the Beta Version.

This would also allow you to add your thoughts of what you are planning and we might be able to test them before you even do the work to release the beta.

Just some ideas to try and help.
lawson23
So are we all set. The list Stidy has provided is it?

Seems like we didn't get much discussion on this topic. I guess I can say Thanks to Stidy for simplfing this.
lawson23
FYI for the users.

These changes have not been released in the 2.5 version.
SteelTrepid
Thanks for informing everyone Lawson. This proved to be a little more complicated than I thought. I am trying to figure out the best method to accomplish this. I have an idea of how to do it, however I need feedback from all of you. What applications should be listed in the "Windows" menu?
lawson23
My opinion and this is only my opinion.

All apps that can be run properly in the Windows environment should be in that menu.

All apps that can be run properly in the PE environment should be in that menu.

Now what do I constitute Properly as?

I will try to describe this with some examples. These are just "examples" and not actually how they may perform today.

Take for example Adawarese functionally it runs in both environments.
But in PE it only scans the file structure and not the Registry.
In the Windows Environment it does both.
Since it provides some a useful feature in both environments I believe it should exist in both menu environments.
(remember this is just a made up example, Do not take the above as being the truth to how Adawarese functions as a plugin currently in anyway)

Ok now lets look at the example of NTRegopt
It can't load the machines registry in the PE environment but can load it in the Windows Environment. Therefore it provides no functional use in the PE environment but provides functional use in the Windows Environment.
Should not be included in the PE menu but should exist in the Windows Menu.

Lastly lets take for example Ram drive resizer
It can't change the ramdrive for Windows environment but can in the PE Environment. Therefore it provides no functional use in the Windows environment but provides functional use in the PE Environment.
Should not be included in the Windows menu but should exist in the PE Menu.

I also want to say that I believe this is a awesome feature and will benefit the UBCD4WIN in a whole new way. I also look at this as not being set in stone. Applications\plugins change and the menu should change with them. If features change that affect the function in an environment the menu structure for that Plugin should be reevaluated.

Now Stidy has started the list of what performs in Windows but not PE is this still accurate?

Are there any additions?

As for the Windows Environment any apps not function???

I think we should take each app and eval it and put it into one of three Categories. You can even do a poll on it but this could be extremely extensive. If you were interested I would create them for everyone.

Categories:
-Functions in PE only
-Functions in Windows Environment only
-Functions in Both Environments
SteelTrepid
Looks good. Maybe a new post should be started. We can make a list and then update it when we agree on changes, assignments, etc.
lawson23
How about 3 post?
One for each category. The first post would only be modifiable by a Moderator. Then we could post in them what apps should fall in that category. Once you or a Mod determines it should exist in that category they add it to the first post as a main list.

What do you think?

Also you can make up the information needed in each post by a user for descibing why it should exist in that category.

How it functions in each environment?
What breaks in the bad environment?
What does work in the bad environment?
and so on.
lawson23
That way someone can't just post.
NTRegopt

They would have to describe why. This would make verification easier for you and the mods.
SteelTrepid
I was thinking about something like that also, but I think it would be too complicated. I will start a post and have the 3 categories listed. Everyone can respond to that post with their suggestions on where things belong.

I will take full responsibility of editing the initial post that has the list, that way I'm not putting extra work off onto another Mod and so we do not get confused.
lawson23
A few items we may want to also look at is some of the items that show in the System menu when running this in the Windows Environment.

Look at system menu. For what is available to be run in the Windows Environment.
