Opera 9.00 plugin (new lighter skin)

Here is a plugin for Opera 9.00. It runs from the RAMDrive (utilizing the SFX_RAR technique). Tested and works using nu2menu & Geoshell. All necessary files are included.

Download and place in your plugin folder, right-click and select extract here. This will create the necessary folders/file structure. Of course, change the Opera_nu2menu.xml menu path to suit your own needs (currently placed in Programs).

New plugin feature:
A new feature has been added to this plugin, allowing you to completely customize Opera to your liking, then a new Opera_SFX.exe with your personal settings will be constructed (functions exactly as my FirefoxPE plugin).

All you need to do is, run Opera in PE, and customize to your personal taste (including a new skin if you desire). Close Opera. Run Make.Opera_SFX.cmd (found in the \Programs\Opera\Opera.SFX.Maker folder) which will reconstruct Opera_SFX.exe for you and place it in the root directory of your RAMDrive (in this case b:\). If size is important (and it would be if you're using this plugin), you may want to navigate to b:\Opera\profile\Skin and manually delete the skins (zip files) you do not wish to keep in your customized version.

Plugin requirements:
For the customization script to work, it assumes your RAMDrive to be b:\ and that WinRAR resides on your BartPE disc at X:\Programs\WinRAR\WinRAR.exe. Change the paths in Make.Opera_SFX.cmd to suit your individual system if different from the default script.

Addendum: Now included in the plugin is an "advertisement" filter to help make your surfing experience a little less "cumbersome."

The plugin was made with best viewing at 1024 x 768 resolution or greater. It will function at any resolution.

Updated the Opera plugin to 8.01 - as is customary, all files are included. Edit the nu2menu .xml file to reflect where you want to place it in your menu - it's currently in generic Programs.

Download info in first post.

Cool plugin...

Does it then allow me to access my Opera bookmarks from the hard drive?

Opera is my favourite browser, but I like the firefox plugin that comes with the build.

I am new to the UBCD4Win and am still exploring all of it's great properties.

Tip top forum too wink.gif

Yes, you can import Opera bookmarks from your hard drive. Select:
  • File|Import and export|Import Opera Bookmarks...
  • Navigate to your Opera 8\profile folder and choose opera8.adr
  • Your bookmarks have now been imported
To be honest, the more I use Firefox, the more I hate it. It's features are fairly barren unless you add extensions, which in itself is easy enough (if you can find what you need for the version you have), but it's maintaining the plugins that is somewhat difficult - it's a real PITA to upgrade and keep your settings for PE. Firefox should definitely have some sort of upgrade routine in their installer to minimize the trauma caused by trying to keep my settings from version to version in PE. Stepping down off my soapbox now...

Happy bookmarking... and enjoy Opera 8.01...

For those that like it, the Opera plugin has been updated to v8.02. Minor radio button/bookmark changes.

See the Opera changelog.

No version change, but I modified the plugin so that it now adds an "advertisement" filter to many ad servers. Bye-bye ads!

Updated link is in the first post.

Only difference in this plugin is I greatly expanded the filter list to block advertisements from ad-servers. As usual, updated link is in the first post.

dig I would like to run this from temp or maybe bin on my ramdrive and not from the root on the drive. But when copied there well you get graphics corruption of for instance the toolbar.

Do you know is there anyway to run it from a subfolder? like %temp% for instance.

I haven't experienced any graphics corruption, and can't think of a reason why location would be an issue, but it is easy to change the location...

Firstly, it is already using a subfolder called Opera, so if your RAMDrive is located at b:\ (most are), the plugin creates and runs from b:\Opera. It should not be running from the root of your RAMDrive...

Nonetheless, to change the location, simply following these directions exactly:
  • find Opera_SFX.exe with Windows explorer, and right-click and select Open with WinRAR
  • click on the Comment icon on the toolbar or, alternatively, choose Commands|Add archive comment from the pull-down menu
  • You'll see the following:
Path=%ramdrv%Opera
Setup=Opera.exe
Silent=1
Overwrite=2
  • simply change %ramdrv% to .\%temp% and substitute the folder name of your choice for Opera

One caveat: I used to think running from %temp% was at least as logical as using %ramdrv%, but one can run into some undesired results... for example, I have two versions of a Trillian plugin - a "public" version and "private" version. The public version is generic, in that you have to login manually to each account... I added a small routine in my "private" version, which asks for a password, then extracts all my personal settings and then autoruns Trillian logging in to all my accounts automatically. Works pretty slick, except for the fact that, if I forget, and run it from Windows, and not PE, and the drive variable was %temp%, my "sensitive" information would be written to the hard drive - probably at c:\temp. Same would be true for potentially sensitive bookmarks you may place in a customized Opera plugin... so for plugins I consider completely "safe", either %ramdrv% or %temp% seems to be fine options, but for those which "may" contain data you wish not to accidentally place in a folder which is easily accessed by other, I purposefully choose NOT to use %temp%.

well in my case I dont use this for an every day system. It is exclusively for system maintenance and repair. As such I dont have anything in there at all of a sensitive nature. It is all freely usable.

Another thing about it is that my builds like your mini pe builds are custom and only used in my shop. I have customized everything to run with low system resources and be usable that way. For instance bblean shell runs under 1 meg and usually around 500k and includes a full menu that uses the xpe shortcuts. Compare that to the average of 3 - 4 megs for geo shell and another 2 megs minimum for nu2menu. Everything is like this in my builds so that it can be run in low resource systems.
