I copied my XP Pro CD to a directory: C:\XP

Is there anyway I can slipstream to that location using the SP2 CD?

Or, can I boot from an old UBCD and create the ISO from my boot drive? C:\WINDOWS

I've been downloading all morning and I currently have 11% of the SP2 file from MS. The estimation is 24 more hours of downloading.

Thanks in advance! blink.gif

You can use AutoStreamer to slipstream SP2 into your XP installation. Should be on the downloads page area. If you have a SP2 CD, there is a very large file on it (forgot the exact name) which is the actual SP file. Copy that to your HD, say, in folder C:\XP\SP2. Then, just point AutoStreamer to that location on your HD with your XP installation files and your SP2 file. Let us know if you have any problems. smile.gif

Awesome! Thanks a bunch. I would have spent a day and a half and most likely would have a corrupted download to show for it.

I did play around a bit. After discovering which file I needed I tried the commandline and it works also.

The resulting directories differed though. The subdir I ran the AutoStreamer on was 883,384,890 bytes and the subdir I ran the commandline on was 604,457,298 bytes.

I created an image for each and the resulting pebuilder.isos were the same size: 352,512,000 bytes.

I also discovered (after the fact) that Bart's has a slip stream utility built into it. I'm using the beta 3.14 version.

Thanks again; great work and info as always!

I've gotten mixed results and reports about the slipstreaming capability in PE Builder. So that is half the reason why I do not recommend it. He just added that capability when he released the new version of PE Builder in December. When the project started over a year ago there were very few options out there for slipstreaming, basically you had to manually do it. So I helped create AutoStreamer in June of last year. A friend of mine did most of the work but I helped in several ways. Since it was the first and we've been using it for so long we feel that we should still recommend it even though there are other options now out there. Understand?

Arg. I wrote my thanks while I was burning the CD's. There was an error with a particular file on into the boot process in each CD I created. I should have known to wait before reporting success.

For now I must retract the report of success in slipstreaming from the SP2 CD.

I have a download manager going and now have 64% of the SP2 file from MS. There must be significant differences in the MS files and those on the SP2 CD, or perhaps I need to run another program on the CD.

The CD file is XPSP2.EXE in the root directory: 278,927,592 bytes

I'll nail down the time to start over from scratch and report the results asap.

I'll be back...

The file on the CD from MS should be fine. We've had many users report that they can slipstream with that file. What exactly did you do? You used AutoStreamer right? What language version of XP are you using? You copied your XP CD to your HDD right?

I'm in the states using English.

I created two subdirs:

C:\XP
C:\XP2

I set Explorer as directed and copied my XP Pro CD to each subdir.

I used AutoStreamer for the first subdir. I used the "Set Shares" option so that I could direct it to slipstream to C:\XP. I used my SP2 CD as the SS source.

For the second subdir I used commandline.

The CD file is XPSP2.EXE in the root directory of E: 278,927,592 bytes

E:\XPSP2.EXE /integrate:C:\XP2

Everything appeared to work fine. There was a file extraction and then integration, just as I observed with the first subdir.

As I noted previously, the two subdirs differed in size:

C:\XP ---> 883,384,890 bytes
C:\XP2 --> 604,457,298 bytes

However, after running the PE builder on both subdirs the resulting .iso files were identical in size: 352,512,000 bytes

Running low on time I burned one, the commandline .iso, and it started to boot, maybe 12-15 progress bars, before throwing an error concerning a particular file. In all fairness, since you are referring to your utility, I should have used that one. Being identical in size, I assumed the results from both methods were identical, but that's not necessarily so. I need blank CD's to play more. I'll get some and spend time this weekend trying again and documenting each step better.

The only other thing that I did that might affect this was to include a single folder with a new version of Everest in it in both .iso's in the PE builder GUI. I was curious as to whether I could get it to run, or install to the ram drive or hard drive. I wasn't sure what to do with the Everest .cab file.

Unless you see something obviously wrong here, I'll start from scratch this weekend and try all three methods (I _finally_ got the SP2 file downloaded). I'll document each step to refer back to and see if all three methods can be made to work and log any errors that I make in the processes.

On a side note, I'm also curious as to other Window Updates. AutoStreamer is a great utility. Is there a way to integrate all MS updates as stored in WUTool into the .iso? I've stayed current on critical updates and I've still been exploited twice so far. If I were working on a friends computer and I connect to the internet to download drivers or something... well I know it's a boot from a CD, but how vulnerable is the hard disk while the machine is connected? My thoughts are that exploits are probably hard coded for C: and the various XP directories and files that will be on it. IE seems to be the revolving front door, but I imagine there are other entrances also.

Most of the newer updates from Microsoft should support the /integrate switch. smile.gif

Thanks! I tried a few of the newer ones, but only one of them worked. It looks like only the MS files named "Hotfix.exe or Update.exe" support the integrate switch:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/262841/

As to the SP2 CD integration, it worked perfectly with AutoStreamer and with the commandline integrate switch with Bart's 3.1.3. There possibly might be a problem with Bart's 3.1.4 beta and commandline method.

Another suspicion, use the entire SP2 CD, rather than the XPSP2.exe file. I couldn't document this, but I think that other files on the CD are used in slipstreaming.

Thanks for the support all!
