Full Version: Best way to keep other pcs on the LAN safe?

I am using UBCD4Win to boot up a heavily infected pc connected to my LAN with viruses and malware. I am concerned that this infected pc could then in turn infect the other pcs on my lan. What is the best way to go about keeping all of my other pcs on my lan from becoming infected? I need to keep all the pcs networked together so that I can download files from these other pcs onto the infected pc. Also, I usually will take the infected pc's important files and copy them to the harddrive of a good pc on my lan for backup purposes. Then fix the infected pc and copy the files back onto it.

Would simplily running a software firewall such as ZoneAlarm on all the GOOD pcs on my lan do the trick and keep them safe?

Also, what is the easiest way to set up a share so that when I boot a pc with UBCD4Win, I can just punch in a quick share name and be able to access other LAN harddrives. The problem I see with this is what if my other pcs are using a different workgroup, etc. I imagine UBCD4Win defaults to "WORKGROUP" for the workgroup name and my other lan pcs are using something different for the workgroup name.

The only guaranteed way is to cut the network cable but the next best way is to put the infected computer on a seperate network from your lan and use ftp to transfer files.

The easiest (and cheapest) way to accomplish this is to install a FREESCO router.
(Read the FREESCO documentation and you'll see what I'm talking about)

NO !!! Forget about that idea, you need to physically seperate your trusted network from your infected PC's.

Why do you need to have the infected PC connected to the other PC? To copy files? CD-RW's have always worked well in my case.

A more effective option might be to remove most of the infection using the UBCD4WIN CD and then connecting the infected PC.

mainly the reason for doing this is so I can access network shares and transfer files to and from the infected pc... like if I need to do an image of the infected pc's harddrive, I can save that image directly to a local share on another pc's harddrive..

I hope that you're just "fixing" your own pc's and not other people's!

NEVER plug in an infected PC into your lan. Even worse, you should never ever plug in another PC to that same lan that was exposed to the first infected PC!

You're "infected" PC's really need to have a network of their own (even after they're cleaned). Take Artic Wolf's advice and don't even connect them to the internet until they've been cleaned while running ubcd4win and using cd-rw's to transfer files. After that, use FTP to transfer files if needed.

Is the infected PC running in windows or is it running the Project. If the infected PC is running windows (and all the viruses and spy/malware) i would agree with pcuser... but if the infected PC is running ONLY THE PROJECT's environment the malware and viruses wont get executed
