Has anyone else noticed problems or have a reason why I'm seeing these issues?

I have a "generic" DVD burner, however it's never produced any "coasters." Now, It is a 12X and I'm using 8X DVD's. I just happen to notice tonight that the speed is varying when burning. In the past I've noticed these DVD's burn at 4X and have been a little upset. Tonight I've noticed that a few times during the burn process it's hit 8X for a few minutes and then went back down to 4X. WTF? Bad media or bad drive? I'm really thinking media and I'd like to test this "theory," well when I have the money to do so that is.

What does everyone else think?

You might check for a firmware update for your DVD burner.

Here's some links to decent FAQ's that may help.

Perfectly normal for speeds to go up and down, especially if you use crap like Roxio and whatnot. If you use Nero, even though it says it's burning at one speed, it's still varying a bit, which is fine. I know that when I burn, it usually gradually gets up to 8x (or 16x sometimes) and then goes back down right at the end. No problems with what was burned. It's just how it is. smile.gif

I was using DVD Decrypter last night to make my backup copies of my Chappelle's Show Season 2 DVD's. In the past I guess I just never really paid much attention. It makes sense, but I just didn't expect it to fluctuate much in the middle of burning a DVD.

Well, if you are burning a DVD, it shouldn't fluctuate that much during the middle unless you are busy doing a bunch of other things on your computer and your computer isn't powerful enough to handle it. On the other hand, if you are ripping a DVD or something, then it can fluctuate a lot due to the file count and the number of scratches and marks on the DVD that can screw things up or just slow them down. smile.gif

Yeah, that's why I thought it was so weird. During the build process and with nothing running in the background, just for safe measures (don't want to burn coasters).

A P4 3.0 with 1280Meg DDR333, my system can handle it....even with app.'s running in the background.

Ok, burnt several more DVD's. They are "Maxell" brand...but give "Ritek" as the manufacturer. I've always been under the assumption that Ritek was good??

Now, after about 1.3 gig of data is burnt (28% of the way through the burn)....the burn speed drops and kinda fluctuates for a few seconds. Then kicks up to 8x speed, until it finishes. I thought that after a while before that the speed dropped off again to 4x...but for these 3 DVD's it didn't. Total burn time for each was about 10 minutes, if only it would burn at 8x during the whole DVD...then it would probably be 7 or 8 minutes!!

Anyways....just thought I would report back.

Steel,
I also highly recommend checking the manufacture for a Fireware upgrade to your drive. One of the things these firmware upgrades contain are media information. As your drive might be recognizing the media (kinda) it may think it is something else. Part way through the burn it might go oh you are this you can handle this speed. Now that sounds pretty far fetched but hey it is a slim possibility. Just to let you know I have probably upgraded the firmware on my drive 8 times since buying it. 98% of the firmware updates have only been media updates. I have a Micro Advantage 4x burner.

Also is media above 4x still over priced?

Yes, updating firmware is always good. And no, 8x DVDs are priced well, but any higher is where you get to more expensive. smile.gif
