hello smile.gifi know UBCD4Win is brilliant and i want to try it out.

i am following the guide from here i already have "Show Hidden Files and Folders" and "Hide Protected Operating System Files" configured. i have made this folder here C:\UBCD4WIN with UBCD4WinV255.exe in it.

when i execute UBCD4WinV255.exe all that happens is the files are decompressed and i don't have the "Introduction" screen as per the link above. i feel really bad i'm stuck so early on, i really want to use ubcd4win.

i thought i had downloaded the correct/latest .exe, but should i have ubcd4win.exe and not UBCD4WinV255.exe ? will you help me please? thank you.

I think you missed this line in the guide.

Download ubcd4win.exe from HERE and save it to your empty build folder.

http://www.ezpcfix.net/beta/ubcd4win.exe

good luck

Yup, crappie83 is right. You downloaded the correct release fine, but you didn't get the "Config Tool" which is what that guide goes through. The Config Tool makes it easy to help you create your UBCD4Win. smile.gif
Danielle
hi, i see where i went wrong. thanks for helping me. smile.gif

i just used the configuration tool and this time it said i don't have the drivers. when i tried all three of the driver sites the tool has all the sites were down so i went here and downloaded "Driver 2.01" i checked the hash and it was correct. however, the download is only 4.5MB and the configuation tool says the driver pack should be 12MB and it still says i don't have the drivers. also, when i decompressed UBCD4WinDriversV201.exe there were no .sys files in it. i'll try again tomorrow, maybe one of the sites the configuration tool uses will be up then smile.gifthanks.
SteelTrepid
Sorry, the config tool isn't setup for the new version of the driver download. If you don't think you need the drivers...then move on and don't worry about it. If you do and plan on using the config tool....then download V1.6 (it's still available) on the site.
Danielle
hi, SteelTrepid, thank you. i don't like to keep bothering all of you but, EzPcFix's Driver 1.6 link on this page is down ATM, is there another mirror?

if i use the 1.6 drivers does that mean i should use the manual method? and not the config tool. thanks.

NO, the config tool is set up to work with versoin 1.6 of the drivers.
It is not yet ready to be used with the new 2.x version of the bts driverpacks plugin.

LittlBUGer
I'll have the UBCD4Win Drivers V 1.6 back up on my downloads site in around 10 minutes... HERE smile.gif

about the 1.6 pack. The net drivers would be handy to keep around as I have found a at least one card that still works with your old pack and not the bts pack. The bts packs are surely the way to go for mass storage though and there has been reports of them working with hardware that the old packs did not so I keep them both around. Well that is I keep the net drivers from the old pack around.
SteelTrepid
I was thinking that also. There are some that do not want to go with the new version. I was going to open up a discussion in the "beta area" about this. I think we may need to keep both up and available.
webmedic
no only the net drivers from the old pack. The bts pack is much better for the massotarage drivers.

Yes, that's true. I haven't really heard if doing both drivers methods work (if you just kept the Net folder from 1.6) but maybe we need to test? smile.gif
webmedic
well I did that here and it seems ot work great. The reason why was because virtual pc bic was no longer being seen. So I just kept the older drivers in there. Something is not quite right though. It sees the nic now but wont use it. I would say it's worth a little more work to figure it out but anyway.
Danielle
hi, sorry for being slow to reply. i downloaded the 1.6 drivers from LittlBUGer's site, thanks for the link. when i've managed to burn a copy with those drivers i'll try the latest pack - BT.

i was getting an error about a setup file in C:\UBCD4WIN\I386 not being found. i had my I386 directory, which i'd copied from my Windows CD, in a folder called "XP CD", along with the other copied files from CD, like this -
C:\UBCD4WIN\XP CD
so i took the I386 out of the XP CD folder and put it straight in the UBCD4WIN folder leaving the other files in the XP CD folder. is that OK?

i now get as far as making the log file from Bart PE. there's one error, this -

Error: SetupDecompressOrCopyFile "C:\UBCD4WIN\i386\sdhcinst.dll" to "C:\UBCD4WIN\BartPE\i386\system32\sdhcinst.dll" returned error 2: The system cannot find the file specified.

i've just put the DLL in that directory and i'll see if it works now. thanks for all the help smile.gif

Hi

I think you need to start again as you seem to be getting confused.

Create the following folders.

C:\UBCD4Win
C:\WinXP

Copy the entire contents of your WinXP CD into the C:\WinXP folder.

Extract the following in this order into the UBCD4Win folder.

1. PEbuilder
2. UBCD4Win
3. V1.6 Drivers if required

Then if you want use the config tool or use pebuilder.exe to create the CD.

I think your getting confused over the I386 issue, if you do the above steps you should get a ISO created.
Danielle
hi smile.gifi wanted to let you know that what i did worked. i created the CD and booted into it and it works perfectly. oh, apart from no network access which i expected. i have the Speedtouch USB modem and it normally courses abit of trouble with live CDs. i'll search the forum to see if i can find out how to fix it tomorrow.

thank you for the help i have had so far. UBCDWIN is better then i thought it would be, i use about 65/75% of the default programs installed with it so i think it's great!

i'm going to learn about the rootkit program it uses tomorrow too. am i right in thinking a rootkit is easier to detect from a mounted drive like UBCDWIN? as the rootkit doesn't have root access to the mounted drive? thanks again.

EDIT opps, forget about the rootkit question, i just realised it doesn't make sense - the rootkit wont be running so wont be hidden. the only way i can think how the rootkit program works is with signatures. unsure.gif

The rootkit program runs a scan of every file on your hard drive from an installed windows environment.
It then does another scan from UBCD & compares the two sets of files to find the rootkit.
