I have using the UBCD4Win for about a week now. Today I tried using various tools on it and a few of them hung. So I rebooted without the CD expecting that my PC would boot up normally (from the C partition).

Instead I got a message about boot.ini and hal.dll being missing or corrupt. So I booted up with UBCD4Win again and looked for those files in C: and they're not there any more. (Yes I have 'view hidden files' turned on.)

I tried using my Xp disc to get into the recovery console and used fixmbr and fixboot, but the problem is still occurring. Any suggestions?

I searched online and found this:
http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_haldll_missing.htm
which includes this suggestion:
start Recovery Console.
Attrib -H -R -S C:\Boot.ini
DEL C:\Boot.ini
BootCfg /Rebuild
Fixboot

But I haven't tried that yet.

Ouch, yeah that's not good. I'm sorry for one and I would really suggest that if any applications hang while the project is booted you really need to open task manager to end them.

What applications hung??

Well here's what I did:
ran DIRMSdefragger
stopped it after about two hours
ran a small program to clean temporary internet files, temp files, etc. from my hard drive.
ran DefragNT. it hung
ran DIRMSdefragger. it moved slowly then hung
rebooted
ran DefragNT. it hung
ran Clear ramdrive, reset geoshell
ran a few things that I don't remember including perhaps DIRMSdefragger.
rebooted w/o UBCD.
got the problem

I didn't know task manager was accessible in UBCD although I just discovered it in, doh, the taskbar.

WOW, Never stop a drive defrag mid-way throiugh the process.
Files are being phisically moved durring the process & not allowing it to finish is a bad thing.

It's always a good idea to run chkdisk on the drive before any file moving applications are used.
If the drive was not dismounted propperly it could have errors & defraging a "corupted" HD
can result with catastrophic loss of data.

If the drive was severally fragmented, it can take up to 15 hours to compleet the process based on
how how large the drive is, how much free space is available to work with & the speed of your CPU.

Try using one of the undelete or file restore applications on the CD & see if you can restore them.

You can always add the missing files back to the HD using UBCD.

Do you know what SP level the installed OS was at?
You need to use the same hal.dll as the service pack is using.
If it's from the same source files that you built UBCD with, just copy the file from the CD
back to where it belongs.

as for the boot.ini file, were you using a basic installation of XP? or was it a multi-boot?

Create a new txt file C:| called boot.txt, add this code to the file & rename it to boot.ini
BOOT.INI (SP2)
CODE
[boot loader]
timeout=30
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /noexecute=optin /fastdetect
If you customised the installation of XP, you will need to edit the above file for your "Systemroot" location.. ie c:\windows.

If copying the files back fails you'll need to do a repair install.

Thanks. I tried undeleting system files, but that didn't help. According to the undelete app a lot of files all over the HD have been deleted. I'll try copying boot.ini from the CD anyhow. If that doesn't work, I'll do the repair install.

Thanks for the link.
