Hi, i've used UBCD on multiple computers over the past month and have not had any problems until now. There is ONE computer that does not boot using UBCD. This is a Dell OptiPlex (566mhz celeron) computer with Linux installed. I dont think the PC model matters because I have had no problems with another PC with the same model. They are exactly identical computers but I can boot into one and not the other. Makes no sense at all.

Basically the problem is this: I put the CD in, boot it up, and it says "Setup is inspecting your computer's hardware configuration". After this, the screen just goes blank and doesn't make any more progress. I actually get the same problem when trying to boot with a regular XP CD so the problem may not be with UBCD. Any help would be appreciated.

Well, if it doesn't boot with a regular XP CD, then it's something else going on. Did you say ONLY Linux is installed? Is there a boot loader? Thanks. smile.gif

It could be you need to update the bios or change a couple of settings in the bios.

I know here at work on some celerons we had needed a bios upgrade and a few settings changing before xp would work. Helpfully I can't find anything at the minute over what those changes where.

You may need to check your motherboard manufacturers website for setting changes and any bios updates needed.

Can you boot into a Linux installation? Say, Knoppix LiveCD or Mandrake, Fedora etc? I "believe" sometimes if the partition table is stuffed, you may run into problems like this. Try deleting ALL partitions. This will delete everything of your PC. No files, no partition table, everything will be gone. Don't do it unless you are certain you can re-create the partitions. Just about any Linux installation will give you a partition manager during install. Then from the free space, create NTFS partition only and nothing else and see if XP install boots.

WARNING, I wouldn't do this if I wasn't sure what I am doing. You have been warned and I give you no guarantee this will fix your problem. If you are prepared to take risks and accept failures then go for it otherwise get somebody else to look at it.

ACPI POWER INTERFACE.

When you see the prompt to press f6 for raid drivers....
PRESS F7, this bypasses the acpi power interface.

I have to comment on this one...

This is really bad advise to gave an unexperianced member.
BUT I do give you credit for the "well-worded" DISCLAIMER. biggrin.gif

If you really feel that content of a HD is stopping a pebuilder created CD (UBCD4WIN) from booting,
just unplug the drive as its not even needed to load Bart's PE.

Or... if you are not comfortable removing the cover from you computer, just disable the drive in the BIOS.

This is a good way to troubleshoot the problem without risking data loos.

yes I agree it is a bad advise to an "unexperienced" user so that's why I also said "you have been warned" because I don't know how advance his knowledge is. But then again, that's how people learn! biggrin.gif

I mean what's the worst that can happen? "Losing all your data" and may be unable to boot your PC because you don't know what to do so unless you are sure you can restore the system, you don't do it.

My self, I would do it as I am 100% confident I can restore the whole system but yes I understand your point .

just unplug the drive as its not even needed to load Bart's PE.

So that I don't look like ignoramt lol, yes, that is very true and I was aware of that but strange things may happen so you never know.

Thanks for pointing it out anyway.
