Full Version: this has got to be the silliest problem ever encountered with ubcd

the topic description basically explains it.

while looking through the programs available, [insert long, bizarre, and embarrassing explanation/excuse here], so now the resolution is far too high (so i can't see anything but the top left corner of the ubcd "desktop" screen). how can i switch it back to something lower?????

right-clicking on the "desktop" doesn't do anything.

i've tried to shut down or restart the computer, but the computer's (compaq presario 700) "off" button won't shut it off!

what keyboard keys can i use to either change the resolution or restart the computer. (i've done everything i need to do in preparation for re-installing windows, i used ubcd to wipe the hard drive, all i need to do now is start the XP cd, which i can't do until i can turn off the computer!)

thanks to ANYONE willing to help with this truly silly problem

Try BGInfo to reset the display. Worth a shot.

Hold the computers power button down for six to 10 seconds, this forces the power supply to auto-shutdown.
secateurs
Pull the power cord out of the wall. That usually turns them off.

XP's NTFS "journaled" filesystem can tolerate unexpected power shutdowns much better than win98's FAT32.
Heed hilander's power down advice. smile.gif

"Pull the power cord" wacko.gif, inadvertently, and you will likely end up with more hard drive errors on top of whatever problems you started out with. excl.gif

Good luck luc!

wow, thanks for the overwhelming help, everyone. i've held the power button down for at least 20 seconds and it refuses to turn off. the batteries are fully charged, so it'll take a little while for it to shut off due to power loss. well, i just tried holding the power button again and it worked this time. quickly. odd. wow, well, i feel like i've wasted everyone's time, but thanks so much! (maybe this will be a good reference for anyone with a similar problem, haha) blink.gif

Well when it's a laptop the easiest thing to do is pull the battery out. I used to have to do that occasionally with the old laptop I have.

If your laptop is still running Bart PE then Alt M (possibly several times) should give you the equivalent of clicking on start button, (which you can't see) then you may be able to reset the graphics or shut down or reboot

Alternatively some laptops have a reset button which require insertion of a biro tip or paper clip to reset the PC

(for other users who have similar problems with start button not being visible)

for those who can't see the "start" button; alt+M will open it, i'm told (see an above reply), but from there (for future reference for myself and others) what keystrokes need to be done in order to change the resolution?

Well, I would just say press the "up" arrow 5 times after pressing alt+M. That should get you to the "system" menu. The top option in the system menu is Display resolution, that should hopefully be visible.

well, i found the solution that i was hoping someone would tell me right away, (this is for the reference of anyone else with precisely the same problem). I'm using UBCD for Windows V 2.5.

press alt+M TWICE, then press the 'down' arrow 3 times, then press 'right'. press 'right' again and then 'enter'. this will bring you to 640x480.

Well that's a bit strange, it behaved differently for my in my tests to help you. However, you are based on an old build so that could explain it. I'm again sorry for the problems, don't worry....the next version of the project will correct these types of issues AT startup!! Hopefully we will be able to release 3.0 within the next couple of weeks! biggrin.gif
