Hi folks,

I searched many boards on the internet on that question for a solution here, it must be possible somehow, though nobody can tell how.

Here is my scenario:

I want to have a bart pe cd. When booting, Virus signatures are updated and a image backup is performed. After that, reboot pc.

This part is easy, I already created this kind of cd, based on McAffee Stinger and Ghost and some scripts.

I would like my pc to:

a OS started
b boot automatically from cd each day at 3:00 am
c update virus signature, make virus scan, backup image
d boot from hdd
e start OS
f continue with a

This should be done without user interaction.

How can this be accomplished?

There has to be a mechanism on the boot cd, which look onto a switch on drive c:\

e.g.:
Always boot from cd.
Boot cd menu looks on hdd c:\, and finds the information, if it should boot barts pe or from hdd.

Does anyone know, how this can be done?
Or has anyone a different idea, how to accomplish a - f without user interaction?

Any ideas are welcome...

Sorry, if the answer has been posted here already, but I did not find the right key words...

Regards,
Marc

Do you really have to do a full system virus scan and make a backup image outside of the OS like that? Both can be easily accomplished within the OS, thus without the need to reboot or use a CD at all. smile.gif

Hi LittleBUGer,

you are right - it is some kind of paranoia. The image backup today can be accomplished online - although I do not have any experience with that. What happens to open database files (Oracle or SQL Server)?

The other more important thing is - a offline virus scan with a different scan tool might be able to find something, which already hided on your system as a root kit.

So do you have a suggestion for my question?

Could there be a BootMenu, which can read the hdd c:\ before continue to boot and which could decide where to boot from based on information on the hdd?

The latest versions of Ghost (9 and above) can do full system images while working in Windows. EVERYTHING is backed up, whether it is active or not, thus the "full system image" notation.

As for a virus scan, I would only suggest doing a virus or spyware scan outside of the OS only when you know things are infected or if the PC crashed and you are trying to rule things out. Otherwise, I would just keep it in Windows and definitely get something better than McAfee, such as NOD32 or something. smile.gif

Hi again,

thanks for the suggestion, I will try to run Ghost 10 for online image backups.

But again: Is there a possibility for a flip-flop boot, as I initially asked for?

Thanks again for any help.
