Full Version: "Modem tool" is now "Hardware Plugin Builder"
UBCD4Win Forums > Main Forum: UBCD4Windows - Support > Hardware Plugin Builder Tool

I've updated the Modem tool to add support for more hardware. It now automagically creates plugins for your Modems, Ethernet adapters and Sata/Raid controllers. It could be possible to add other custom devices so let me know how it works for you.

Remember to disable the DcomLaunch plugin if you're not building with SP2 source files or your modem (and many other things) won't work.

Simply copy the "MyDrivers" folder to your plugin directory after creating your driver plugins and rebuild UBCD4WIN.

If you would like to see support for other devices (pci adsl modems, etc...) please post the ClassGUID for that hardware. As an example, here's the ClassGUID for Network Adapters:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E972-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}

Please let me know how this works for everyone smile.gif

The new name of the file is HPB.exe and you can download it from http://ezpcfix.net/beta/HPB.exe

Thanks Joshua smile.gif

I wonder if my autogenerated plugin will work for your nic. If not, could you PM me with your windows\inf\oem38.inf file so I can take a look at it?

Thanks,

Nice choice of words! biggrin.gifclapping.gif

I'd like to know if that plugin works for your device also. There is quite a difference in the two. smile.gif

I'm also wondering if that other tool is just a bunch of scripts like his other tools, autoit, or what??

Is video hardware support possible with this tool...? blink.gif

@digiwiz

I have admired your MiniPE philosophy and would love to see an implementation of it with UBCD4WIN. Having a "credit card" CD with the these recovery tools would be a true delight....maybe an Autobuild "option" to generate such a build could be developed...? banana.gif

@ All

Thank you very very much for your phenomenal effort(s) !!! clapping.gif

I manage a consulting structural engineering firm with a staff of 35 (36 workstations, 3 servers, and 3 SNAP servers) and....since the proverbial "buck" stops at my desk...I get the "nomination" as the "computer guy" too. We run a mixture of XP Pro, XP Home, W2K3 Sever, and W2K3 SBS on a broad spectrum of Dell products for workstations and HP Compaq products for servers.

UBCD4Win has proven "strategic" to say the least in its usefulness. The one area that could use the most help is video support. In particular, these machines have a variety of graphics processors - varying across on-board Intel graphics, PCI cards, and AGP cards and across VGA analog and DVI digital...and Silicon Graphics proprietary cards (used in our CAD machines). The graphics issue is perhaps the tallest stumbling block in building the UBCD4WIN disks.

Just thought I'd pass along some perspective on one of your "clients"....Thanx again!

You can't even imagine how many hours are spent on developing something like this that is distributed for free (no monitary gain) with the only exptions being a few small donations to the project by people such as yourself. (hint, hint biggrin.gif)

Check to see if the drivers you need are already in one of the driver packs.

If you know exactly what drivers your video cards require, post a link to the driver download & we could probobly get them working for you. If the "proprietory" drivers are not alailble as a download you will need to send them to us & we will see what can be done.

Hi,
I have a Smartlink 56K voice modem in my machine. How do I find the registry key (like the above) for it? If its any help in device manager the Device Instance ID listed is PCI\VEN_2000&DEV_2800&SUBSYS_2800122D&REV_02\4&13699180&0&4048
pcuser
Modem support is already built-in but to answer your question, open regedit and navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class and scroll through the ClassGUID's until you find the type of hardware that you're looking for. In this case it would be "Modems" that we're looking for which you'll find has a ClassGUID of {4D36E96D-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}.

BTW. I'm working on a much more advanced version of this tool that will do a better job of parsing the inf file. More on that later though...

Hi,
I'm not sure if I'm building this plugin right. I ran the tool from my desktop and got several errors that said: "Couldn't locate" mtlmnt5.sy_ ,mtlstrm.sy_ , slnthal.sy_ ,slntamr.sy_ ,slwdmsup.sy_ ,slmdmco.dl_ ,slmdmsp.dl_ ,slmdmgx.dl_ ,RecAgent.sy_

The tool did create two files called "MyDriver" and "OEM10"

If its any help I ran this tool while I was online, and I ran it from the desktop.
Please let me know if I'm doing something wrong or if you need more information.
Thanks!

Thanks for making available these useful tools. smile.gif
I've tested both (not had the time to rebuild UBCD4WIN, though) and report a strange behaviour of HPB.exe as compared to Modem.exe.
Although it creates plugins for my various Ethernet NICs, it doesn't create a plugin for my modem (a Generic SoftK56 modem). sad.gif
Whereas I get the plugin with modem.exe, I get this error message with hpb.exe:
"there are no driver files loaded for that device" and no creation of inf file.

@pcuser

Your program has a promissing future, and I will look closely to future versions..

I have a few questions:

1 - Would it be possible to run your application from a script file? - either run from batch, or .script files and outputing the result in a environment %variable% (I can better explain how if you wish), using switches and parameters to predefine the actions to take?

2 - Option to output the result as a .script file? (It would allow to add these drivers to BartPE without having run pebuilder again..)

p.s. I'm a delphi developer too, if you have any problem related to delphi programming just let me know..

Tom,
Thanks for your work. Appreciate it. Regarding the modem tool, I've got what is probably a dumb question. The driver was automatically created: 'MyDrivers' put in the Plugin and the .inf file created, etc. It looks right, but I'm having trouble getting online, trying to update AvPersonal, as an example. Is there a communication program there that I'm missing? or how is it initialized?

Thanks for your trouble and one more time, appreciate your work.

@Tom, Admins, and Moderators:
I have collected a few of my driver CDs together for my various hardware, and several of the CDs were apparently used for/packaged with several different Hardware gadgets, as some of them have loads of drivers for different things on one CD (and the CD labels are somewhat plain and non-descriptive). I have copied two of those CDs to my hard drive, and eliminated anything that looked line it was non-english as well as any drivers that looked like they were for Windows 9x/ME (When I wasn't sure, I left some Win 2K stuff intact). For the most part, this was easy, as most of the driver folders wee setup with the drivers for each OS in a different folder. I just removed all of the InstallShield Setup files (The ones that I was sure were just InstallShield related),and all of the non-XP folders.

Anyway, I'm rambling yet again..

I'd like to submit them for the greater good of this project. I don't know to whom to send them or where. I would post them to a hidden folder on my website (which contains nothing too interesting), but Verizon DSL only gives me 10 Meg storage, and the 7-Zip file is just over 11 MB. I can send up to a 20 MB attachement in my webmail though. If someone would like to sift through the file that I've assembled to include in a future version of UBCD4Win, I'd be happy to submit it. Send me a PM with a place where I can send it. This will give Tom some more inf files to test, and hopefully benefit someone else in the long run).

(If anyone suggests rapidshare or the like, they had better pray that I don't find out where they live...) boxing.gifbash.gifdevil.gifph34r.gif

Disclaimer: I'm serious about the rapidshare part, but kidding about the violence. I'm not a hostile guy, but I do need to be careful about those idol threats.

Okay, I just sent off an email to the person who responded. In the mean time - hypothetical situation: I have a computer which has a WiFi card with the same driver files and same chipset as other cards which have working drivers included in UBCD4Win. The WiFi card that I use doesn't work no matter what I do. I suspect that the .inf file somehow doesn't list my card or something inside it or something. I don't know much about .inf files. In theory, could I just make a new folder under Drivers and insert my .sys and .inf files, etc. even though the .sys and .dll files are exactly identical to the existing ones. (I would be using the .inf file that was packaged with my card rather than the one that is already packaged with UBCD4Win). If I'm being too vague, I can give specifics, I kind of want to know if this general procedure would work for any hardware under similar circomstances.

Anyone have any thoughts and/or ideas on this?
pcuser
I PM'ed you with my email address and you responded saying that you've already sent it to SteelTrepid.

Your "hypothetical situation" can be explained many times by searching, the last file to be processed is the one that's used so your idea about making a new folder won't work without removing the conflicting driver.

What adapter do you have?

Atheros 5212 Mini-PCI card. It IS listed in the list of supported drivers, but it still doesn't work. I have uploaded the driver that I have for this, as well as a driver for my D-Link DSB-650TX USB to Ethernet adapter to my web site. Due to the fact that I don't know what bandwidth limitations are for my complementary 10 MB Web Space (it came with my Verizon DSL subscription), I won't list the files' locations here. PM me again if you want, and I'll PM you back with the links. I included the links in my email to SteelTrepid also. You (or someone) may just have to manually merge the .inf files for the Atheros chipset. I wonder if I rename the .inf file - would it work then, as the inf files would be different names. I believe that the other files were the same, but I'll double-check that with an md5sum of the files. Um, maybe I'll do that tomorrow. It's late now.

G'night.
garlicsalt2
Um, I think that I forgot to mention that I was using the v3 built-in driver pack when I couldn't get my friend's Atheros card to work. I was also using that one when I tried my Belkin F5D5050 and D-Link USB Adapters. I will try the USB Adapters soon, now that I have built the patched version with the new drivers. I completed repairs on the Notebook PC with the Atheros card and gave it back to its owner, so I can't test that immediately.

In the mean time, a note to Tom/pcuser: Just a heads-up, I downloaded your HPB.exe file less then a month ago. The version that I have says that it was updated in May (I think), but that it is ver. 1.0.0.0. That is what I see when I hover my mouse over the app. Probably just an oversight, so I'm bringing this to your attantion. No big deal I guess. Maybe you could fix that in the next release?
Gedrean
Here's a question. This should run on any computer with Intel x86 or semicompatible hardware. Therefore, would the admins be able to do something with a copy of the driver CD from a Mac-Intel computer? Or would HPB need to be run on that computer and the result be sent in? Anyhow, thank you.
