AMD will begin punching out Socket AM2-based processors at the end of April in preparation for a 6 June launch - a date that will also see the introduction of "energy efficient" desktop chips to help the company counter Intel's performance-per-Watt strategy, the latest roadmap leaks suggest.
So claims DailyTech. Its information nicely complements the roadmap data presented in a slide that slipped out of the chip maker over a week ago. It revealed the upcoming arrival of the Athlon 64 FX-62, followed by the 65nm FX-64 in Q1 2007.
We now know the FX-62's power envelope. It will rate at 125W, apparently, up from the FX-60's 110W Thermal Design Power (TDP). The six dual-core Socket AM2 Athlon 64 X2s due to launch 6 June - 3800+ up to 5000+ - all sport 89W TDPs, while the two single-core parts getting the socket upgrade on the 6th, the 3500+ and the 3800+, are rated at 62W.
