I just got a new d-link (wireless) router and had set it up and my LAN (2 desktops-1 wirelesss laptop)was working perfectly. My wireless LAN was working perfectly also. Only problem....I couldn't get out to the internet through the router (cable connection). I fooled around with it for 2-3 days with no success. Then I broke down and called d-link technical support. Well I'm pleased to say, they got me up and running. clapping.gif

Now for the head scratcher:

I had set up the WAN for dynamic ip (same as tech support suggested). I had set up my desktop for dhcp in the LAN config also with auto assigned IP. That's when I could not get out to the net. The tech support had me manually assign an IP to one of my desktops(in Windows). They also had me assign some really strange preferred DNS server IP's (4.2.2.2 and 4.2.2.3)(in Windows) OK dandy...now I have net access. Only thing is, I still have dhcp configed with auto assigned IP's on the other desktop and the laptop. This makes no sense to me. Why does one box need an assigned IP and the others not? I don't get it. blink.gif

Anyone have any thoughts?

Thanks

Try booting UBCD4Win on that pc and see if you have net access. If it works from UBCD4Win then you know it's a software/configuration problem.

Thanks for the reply pcuser.
I'm not really confused about whether it's a software problem. I'm just confused as to why one pc on the lan needs an assigned IP and the others do not.

Update: I'm on my laptop now wirelessly. Last night I had access without assigning an IP in windows. Today I couldn't connect without assinging an IP. Seems screwy to me. Maybe I need to assign Ip's to all boxes on the LAN.

Are all of the box's using WinXP? ... the reason I would have suggested using the boot CD also is to make sure the issue isn't hardware... then you have an idea if it is a software configuration issue or not...

One of them is Win98SE. It turns out that after powering everything down, none of the machines without an IP assigned in the network properties would connect through the router to the net. I've assigned IP's to all machines now and all seems well. It just seemed strange to me.

Thanks for the replies.

I've never had issues with a DLink router and any version of Windows but... Win9x systems often need to have the IP's released and renewed... a power off and back on usually doesn't correct it initially. I've never had this issue with XP though.
