Full Version: VIDEO SUPPORT?
UBCD4Win Forums > Main Forum: UBCD4Windows - Support > Suggestions & Requests

I have posted to the forum various times regarding the UBCD WIN utilities to set (SETRES) the video mode, resolution etc. This has never really worked properly. Then it occurred to me, and I checked also, voila! UBCD does not install any video drivers, it seems to use the generic VGA driver. This seems odd, because you supply other drivers but no graphic drivers? Is this easy to implement? Seems important...as screen real estate quickly becomes a premium. I have an Intel ExtremeGraphics built in chipset....which as part of the DELL lineup certainly has to be one of the bigger chipsets out there for graphics...so what do we need to install graphics drivers? We install network drivers, storage drivers, usb drivers...what's the deal with GRAPHICS? ... ok then. I love this product so much now...and this is my ONLY concern!

Just like BartPE from which this project is developed, the goal has always been as a recovery/repair utility. Graphics and multimedia were the least of concerns except by users trying to use it for things other than what it was intended for. This should not stop you from finding and using these or other drivers for your uses... this just means that the project didn't have those intentions when it was created.

I am already working on a solution for this. Many members of this project don't want multimedia support added, but it will be coming soon enough anyway. It's a tough call on how to handle this but the arguments on both sides are vadid, so I would imaging that these features will either be disabled by default, or require an additional download if they add too much more size to the download. We are already much larger than anyone thought the download wuold be, but I see it getting around 150-160mb just with some required changes & added drivers.

I hope it was obvious that I was trying to explain why graphic ( one of the issues MattInLA brought up ) wasn't an area that has not been addressed... and not trying to discourage others from trying things in these area's

Moving just a bit off-topic from the graphics question...

@hilander999

How close to that goal ( of supporting graphics, video and other multimedia ) do you think the project is disreguarding the drivers themselves that is? I had felt it was very close now if only the drivers were added along with a few codec's to help support some of this.

Pretty close. For the codec question, I have already tested vlc mediaplayer & it works awesome without adding anything else, of course right now there is no audio driver support but that's not going to be very hard to introduce once I get other things finished. It's definately comming some time down the road. smile.gif

One of the main reasons we don't currently include any other drivers is because we use pebuilder's way of including drivers (the easy way) which currently only supports network and storage drivers. We could go the plugin route, but that's much more difficult and time consuming. I wouldn't worry too much about video support though as we are in collaboration with BTS himself and will soon have an easy method to integrate all of the BTS driver packs into the project (which of course include 3 different graphics packs). smile.gif

I know with the older builds that had the 'option' for the BTS intigration that inclusion of audio worked flawlessly. Was able to view/play all my mp3's and music videos on the system. I am personally looking forward to the BTS intigration because part of the troubleshooting that i personally perform is actually on the hardware such as sound and video. Running a Live system with those allows me to verify wether the system can perform adequetly with known good configuration. This has personally saved me hours of TSing a system that had audio issues just to find out that the onboard chip was flawed, but in a spare and system worked good.

Hmmm... well, if audio card drivers will be supported in the future, I think the XP "Windows Welcome music" should be included as the default audio test file....unless we want to get fancy and use THX. tongue.gif

This is the "ear candy" that plays after a successful installation of XP.
Some may have never heard the install theme without having speakers attached or the proper soundcard drivers installed.
Still, others may have heard it one too many times. blink.gif

XP Windows Welcome music:
C:\I386\TITLE.WMA
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\OOBE\IMAGES\TITLE.WMA

Just in case anyone wants to see it again:
the short "movie" that plays at installation can be found here:
C:\I386\INTRO.WMV
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\OOBE\IMAGES\INTRO.WMV

NO!!! Don't ever play that XP finished install music here, ever!!! NEVER EVER!!! I've heard it WAY too many times that it drives me nuts! Especially on laptops, they are the worst, as you can't prepare yourself for the speakers to go blazing before it's too late.... grrrr..... :-\

I have an Intel ExtremeGraphics built in chipset....
what's the deal with GRAPHICS?
ATI and Nvidia support more VESA settings.
Default vga.sys gives a proper resolution and colour.

Intel is different. Default vga.sys gives restricted resolution and colour.

Dell: goto BIOS set VGA RAM size

Add Intel graphics drives.

I prefer a basic graphic driver solution: 2D and refresh rate.
This add 300 kb filesize.
