Hi, I have been bitching and moaning some time now, yes about Intel Graphics ya-ta-ta, I've heard the party line, "Yo Matt, Intel uses a nonstandard approach, no can do us" fer chrissake they only sell 30 million freakin' Dell computers a year, I have gotten some inf files, some scripts, thank you, but it's not the complete fix, approach. I need the whole enchilada here, I mean we got this company out there called Intel, yeah I think they put out a few motherboards they're hardly an orphan product, Ben I WILL make a contribution for this, can you give me a workable .inf, script, plugin, xml, DONE AND READY TO BUILD, ENABLED/NON ENABLED AS A PLUGIN. Is this a humongous project, because a number of tech people I have given the disk to have similarly griped about the lack of screen control here on Dell and let's face it, DELL IS HUGE IN CORPORATE AMERICA, does seem like a worthy issue... what is this deal that changes in the bios / buffer resizing has to be done, is that why it's unworkable? I mean if it's unworkable, if it's a royal pain, let me know and I'll zip it.

Yes, we know that Dell sells a lot of computers, especially to businesses, and yes we know Intel is a giant corporation who seems to know what they are doing most of the time, but we can't help it if their on-board graphics suck ass and if people like you keep buying computers with on-board Intel graphics instead of something better. Sorry... though that's just my opinion... smile.gif

Yes you have...

Suggestion: try decaf.. extreme case might need a benzodiazepine.

I have the solution, but my guess is you won't take the advice (though I hope you do) - for many folks, it seems to be, not about the solution, but about the whining. They want a soution THEIR way. I guess we'll see.

The solution is to buy an inexpensive graphics card which is known to work in PE. Done. End of story. No more whining necessary. And all for the cost of about 3 large pizzas.

I'm still surprised at people who will spend many hours, perhaps hundreds of hours try to get something to work, when all it would take is spend $15 to fix the problem - this would be true for NICs and dialup modems. All PE-related problems could be fixed for these 2 devices by simply buying a compatible device.

I agree but side with the need for Intel graphics. The desktops generally can be done in the fashion mentioned but laptops are another story. I have not complained as I know it is very hard to do if not imposible. It would be nice to have that functionality as I also work in a Dell only shop. It is a limitation that I live with but it would also be nice to be able to get better support for intel display drivers. I tried playin with it a bit ago but got no where with it. I even went so far as to watch the regiostry and files on the computer to try to create a plugin. No avail...

Unlike the thread starter, I am NOT bitching about not having it. However, I agree that the support would be nice to have.

I don't even know what to think of all of this. Everyone just please play nicely.

Agreed... but even then, since PE was designed to be a rescue environment, and not an OS replacement, I guess we can put up with ugly screens long enough to get the computer fixed, then rely on the fixed computer and real OS to do real work.

Agreed. That is one reason why I never complained as it is a recovery tool first and foremost. Even though Barts has this limitation, it is still the best way to deal with broken machines. Tack this project on top and it is a kick ass tool to have in ones arsenal of diags.

Thanks to mbarnes for posting his suggestion:

Most of the PC's I see with Intel Integrated Graphics are in the Dell Optiplex range, The amount of graphics RAM varies considerably, from 1MB fixed to shared memory which can be set in BIOS using some of main memory.

Sometimes these shared memory systems are set at 1MB and can be changed to 8MB or more.

Usually when there is 8MB of video memory the default VESA driver will allow 1024 x 768 XGA or better

cdob has also offered some good advice and has suggested changing the video memory setting in BIOS.

Booting the project on my Dell 4600 (w/ 82865G integrated graphics) has had the nagging low resolution for some time.
I was very pleased to find that this simple BIOS change was what I had missed. "Doh!" bash.gifPerhaps you missed it too?

@MattInLa
Q: Can you confirm changing the BIOS setting for video memory? Have you actually entered the BIOS setup, changed the setting, saved the changes?

This is a fundamental system level setting that needs to done manually.... analogous to setting the boot device to CD-ROM so you can boot from a boot cd.

I would be happy to try it....but what am I CHANGING it to?

More than 1mb.

Try using the highest setting it has.
BvF7734
In most Dell machines with the onboard Video, it is 1MB or 8MB and nothing else. I have checked and some machines were it was craptastic rwsolution it was set to 1MB. Upping to the 8MB seems to have corrected this issue. I wonder why I never thought to look there before... I have seen the same thing on a friends machine that had a legacy 1MB video card and same problem but with XP itself. Replaced with my old Trident 8MB and his machine workd fine. That is why I was thinking drivers and not the fact that XP can't run worth a damn with only 1MB of video RAM.

YAY!
I'm glad that the bios adjustment seems to have worked for you BvF! It's funny how the simple stuff can trip ya.

I've put up with low res screens for too long. surrender.gif
Thanks again mbarnes. worthy.gif

Ok, I am content with all the input I have received, thanks all, this was definitely roundtabled to my complete satisfaction, I will have no further comments / nagging on Intel Graphics performance in UBCD.

**CONSIDER THIS THREAD CLOSED.
(Unless somebody else wants to add his 2 cents......)

Did dirkgently's suggestion work then?

I have to second pcuser's question & wonder why you did not say weither or not the solution has worked.
MattInLA
Eeek! Sorry, didn't know the thread was continued and no,
changing the legacy video bios to 8 MB did NOT work.

Hey, I have a eMachines PC. (One of my three PCs)
Yup, Intel Extreme graphics built-in. Change the shared ram value?? My options are: 8MB, 4 MB, or 1 MB. No AGP Slot (Soder points on the Motherboard, but no physical slot). Beyond annoying!!

A little tidbit though: I'm running Ubuntu Linux (Debian/GNU variant) on it, and I found a package called 915resolution. It's a Linux-only binary, but apparently someone has figured out how to change the resolution of Intel's Extreme cards - THE INTEL WAY!! The documentation says something about a VBIOS and passing BIOS commands to the card??

Anyway, check out:
http://www.geocities.com/stomljen/

It is an OPEN-SOURCE project. If someone has the time and patience to try to port it to Windows, be my guest. I'm more of a script/batch file programmer myself. Oh, I've done C++, JavaSCript, Pascal, and the like. That was back a few years though. (Started on an Apple ][e in the mid-80's, at age 8). I now focus on PC repair though. (I know, I know: Quite a revelation considering I'm on this forum biggrin.gif)

Good luck! And may the Force be with you!!

FYI, this does work. You just need to change the display resolution for the startup.

Nice thread there. No need for the plugin in most cases though... Simply increasing the BIOS Video setting from 1MB to 8MB has fixed the issue on most machines. At least it has fixed every machine I touch here at work and at friends houses.
