Microsoft has announced plans to tighten up anti-piracy features in its forthcoming operating systems Windows Vista and Windows Server "Longhorn".

Redmond's upcoming Software Protection Platform is designed to make software piracy harder while making software licensing less of a chore.

The technology, which is also designed to protect customers from software tampering, will debut with Vista and Longhorn but Redmond plans to incorporate the technology with more products over time. The platform will change how Microsoft software activates, is validated online, and behaves when tampering or hacking is detected.

Don't bother reducing prices which may cut piracy even more then.

Will the shift to linux begin???

I am planning to just stay with XP for now. No need to jump to a cluster F of a op system.

MS's bigger problem is that the whole of window's needs to be rewritten from scratch as the whole thing is too inter-linked one piece of code may completely destabilise the entire system because a dependancy has changed.

If you can image your writing hundreds of lines of new code and you haven't got any idea what the entire effect will be until it's all put together.

Everyone is expecting big business to stick with XP, it will be very interesting to see what happens. Although consumers will be forced to have Vista on all new PC's.

This is why the Mac OS is so stable, because they more or less start from scratch (or more importantly, don't worry about all of that inter-linking and backward compatibility from one major version to the next). If MS would just follow suit, I'm sure it would be so much better. smile.gif

@Stidy,

Vista is a complete re-write from the code up. It is not like XP where it is really NT5.1 Vista is completely new from the ground up and contains compatability to work with some older stuff but not much. I just don't like how they have altered it from the longhorn days where it was cool to have even though it was buggy as hell.

I'll try and find the news thread I read on it which explains it better.

Problem is I've deleted the email with the link so it may take some time for me to find it again......

I think it was LB? who had in his sig a while back that Windows is a 32-bit gui to a 16-bit extension to an 8-bit OS that was originally written for a 4-bit CPU by a 2-bit company that couldn't stand one bit of competition.

Vista is not a re-write but more of the same piled on higher and deeper.

Ya... I've been playing with Vista for a while now... Tuesday, I dropped 4large on a new Mac Pro.... coincidence? no.gif

4 grand on a Mac??!!! NOOOOOOOO!!!! So much money could have been better spent on a PC.... and if not Windows, then Linux... [me sobs...] ohmy.gifsad.gifno.gif

well, in my defence the majority of it was 2 massive widescreen LCD's, and iPod, and a few external HDD's... and besides.. the new macs have boot camp, so I can still run XP smile.gif

Boot Camp or not, it's still a Mac! Difficult to customize and upgrade and that frickin mouse! You should have done yourself a favor and got something that was more of a better purchase (and just as pretty), such as an Alienware... lol. I swear, once I can afford another $250 a month payments, I'm getting my $6750 Alienware Dream PC... one of these days.... wink.gif
