Hey all, im a newb to this sorta thing (slipstreaming, Bart PE etc. etc.) but i work with IT at my university and a fellow IT guy introduced me to Bart PE so now im jumping into it to.

Anyhow, i wanted to slip stream SP2 into my copy of XP (with SP1) and i get the following error

CODE
Run Time error '5':

Invalid procedure call or argument

when i use the 'auto' setup feature in AutoStreamer and allow it to detect my XP CD in the drive.

What gives? Thanks for any help.

P.S. I have version 1.029

I got this error trying to slipstream under Win2K once a long while back but I forgot the fix for it (other than trying in WinXP). I'm pretty sure Steeltrepid knows, or maybe it's somewhere in our archives, I'm not sure. I'll look into that once I get home. smile.gif

I'd also suggest copying the entire contents of your XP CD to a folder on your HD and point AutoStreamer there as it will go much faster and may solve that problem. smile.gif
BrancoBlace
hmmm... no dice on that idea. still getting the same error sad.gif

something else is also happening. when i try to specify my C:\windows\ directory (using my Own Local Share) it doesnt recognize any of my windows files....

Also, the XP.bin file is "an invalid impage format"

thx for the help smile.gif

Ummm, I'm not sure what you are trying to do. Your Windows installation on your computer usually at C:\Windows is NOT the place to point AutoStreamer to. You should copy the entire contents of your XP installation CD to, say, C:\XPCD and then point AutoStreamer to that folder. You also need to download the SP that you are trying to slipstream/integrate and put that file in, say, C:\XPSP and point AutoStreamer to there as well (do NOT extract the SP file, let it as one file---the way you downloaded it). Also, try using a download manager when you download the SP to make sure it's not corrupted. Is what I said above what you did? Any more details would be great. Thanks. smile.gif

Ok.. here's what ive got so far (hopefully in more detail)

ive extracted AutoStreamer to my 30GB slave drive

D:\AutoStreamer\

ive got SP2 (the 270MB developers edition) in the root D:\ directory

and ive copied the ENTIRE contents of my XP CD (that already has SP1 slipstreamed in) to

D:\WindowsCD

theres no real reason why i didnt put everything on my C: drive... i just put it here cause i knew most of it would be temporary. even after doing this (and what you had said) i still get that run time error wacko.gif

thanks

-------------------edit-----------------------
i point autostreamer to:

for Windows

D:\WindowsCD

and for SP2

D:\crazy_long_SP2_name.exe
BrancoBlace
here's what was in my temp.bat file in my D:\AutoStreamer directory

CODE
@echo off
expand "E:\I386\NTOSKRNL.EX_" -F:ntoskrnl.exe "D:\AutoStreamer\NTOSKRNL.EXE"
LittlBUGer
Hmmm.... strange. I'm not sure why it's doing that. I'm hoping someone else will read this and respond as that's very strange. I'll look around to see if there's a solution... smile.gif
BrancoBlace
cool, thx for the help biggrin.gif
BrancoBlace
Ok, i tried AutoStreamer on a different (more high powered) comp at work and i still get the same error. Do you think it could be the CD? It boots fine (from startup), has SP1 and its a legit copy (although i dont have the original CD anymore, the CD itself is a burn using a .bin and .cue file off of an XP cd that i bought)

Thx smile.gif

------edit------
found some usefull links... hopefully it'll jog somebody's memory

It may be the CD, but I highly doubt it. At work I got the same error with our Enterprise CD that I KNOW works perfectly fine. Again, I know there is a fix for this, I just gotta find it... smile.gif

MOST LIKELY SOLUTIONS!!!

Try this:

About the above-linked SP2 version, AutoStreamer says "Build: Unknown".
Can you help me out, raptor ?

For the "error 5" problem the solution is: DO NOT USE SPACES OR SPECIAL CHARACTERS (èòùà or others) INSIDE THE NAME OF YOUR AUDIOSTREAM FOLDER. It works fine (it's not a folder-name-lenght problem).

Hope to had been useful to someone !

P.S. A "MASTERPIECE" SOFT !

Extract the ZIP file's contents to a local folder where you have sufficient permissions (meaning read/write). Do not extract only AutoStreamer.exe and do not double-click it within the archive. There's high chance things will go wrong.

Running:
First you have to select between CD or share mode. If you want to use your original xp cd as a source, go with cd mode. If you have a network share which contains the setup files, pick share mode.

Step 1:
--CD Mode: If you pick cd mode, AutoStreamer will attempt to read your pc's cd drives to detect any windows cds. If you have already inserted your cd in, AS will find it. If not, insert it, and click on the first magnifying glass icon to detect it. After detection suceeds, pick the service pack file by clicking the second magnifying glass icon. AS will attempt to detect what kind of file it is. If all goes well and its a valid SP file (meaning its the correct version, and newer than the source, it is valid) you will be ready to continue to step 2.
--Share Mode: Same as CD Mode, however, the first magnifying glass will prompt you for a valid hard drive location (local or network drive will do). Version detection works here as well. Again, you will have to pick SP file, and AS will verify that everything is good to go...

Step 2:
It's time to label the CD image. you can give any name you want. I usually name it WINXPSP2_EN or something... Next you have to pick the output file location... I use C:\WINXPSP2_EN.ISO...

Hopefully those should help solve your problem. We need to add this to the FAQ or something Steeltrepid! wink.gif

great, i'll try those and let you know. do you happen to have a link to those posts.. i would really like to see what that M$ link is all about and an responses that people have about these solutions

Thanks BUGer smile.gif

ok, here's a complete summary of what ive done.

1) I deleted my autostreamer file and re-DLed v1.029 from this site and extracted it to this file

C:\autostreamer

which oddly enough has Read-Only access checked in the Properties menu and i cant seem to alter that property (even though im full admin). But i can still read/write to any file in that folder.

2) i insert my XP Pro with SP1 CD into my CDROM drive which is E:\... let it autodetect (closed the auto-exe window that pops up).

3)i open autostreamer by clicking on the autostreamer.exe file in it's folder and then selecting "I want to use my original windows CD"

4) Autostreamer does its thing and right after it detects my windows cd it gives me that run time error.

When i "want to specify my own local windows share" and specify my SP2 file it seems to like that just fine. Do i have to extract the SP2 file in any way? i just left it as is (the .exe file) after i DLed it from M$'s website

----- k, more to come.. ive gotta go to class. ill add more when i get back ---------
LittlBUGer
First I would suggest re-downloading AutoStreamer from the main site it's hosted at as Steeltrepid may have an older/corrupted version, I'm not sure. The link to get it is here: Neowin.net Forums
That's also where all of those posts are. The link in the post I made earlier is just the link to download SP2 I think. Don't worry about it. As for the SP2 file that you point AutoStreamer to, yes, just leave the file as is as that's the only way it will work. I hope you get it working alright. smile.gif
BrancoBlace
k, got that pack from the Neowin forums... still the same error. do you think i should go to those forums and talk to them?
SteelTrepid
Generally the Run Time Error 5 is caused by having spaces in folder names, etc. You should have noticed that in Neowin. Since the idea of AutoStreamer was started by me and Raptor was nice enough to create it for us, I do try to check out what errors and fixes come up for it in Neowin. He has been with Neowin for a long time and a lot of his coding efforts go to software on Neowin, that's why he named it similar to his other project "AutoPatcher" and it is mentioned here and there at Neowin. The support forum is there also, but we try to provide as much help as possible. I guess if we had more members and was more active then I could possibly con him into coming here once and a while.

If the "spaces" thing doesn't work for you then I would assume it's the CD. I know Raptor is working on a new version so maybe there will be a few fixes included in the new version.
BrancoBlace
Yea, SteelTrepid... it was the CD in the end i guess. I found this fix for the Dell OEM CD (which i dont have but i guess i have other hotfixes installed on my XP Pro CD besides SP1).

QUOTE
Got the most recent Dell OEM CD I could find (July 2003). In the I386 directory do the following:

1. Delete the directory "SVCPACK" or "UPDATE"
2. Delete the file "SVCPACK.INF"
3. Delete all files named "Q??????.EXE"
4. Delete the following lines in "DOSNET.INF":

[OptionalSrcDirs]svcpack

Now you should be able to slipstream it

So i cleaned up my CD and was able to manually slipstream SP2 into my CD like this.

QUOTE
this is how I made mine this guid is made by gholagha

Slipstreaming" - Integrating the Service Pack 2 into Windows XP

First copy the entire Windows Windows XP CD to your Hard Drive. I use the folder C:\WinXPCD

Now creat a folder by name of "SPExtract" example C:\SPExtract

Now find the Service Pack file (Where ever you downloaded it to, I used C:\Download\WindowsXP-KB835935-SP2-ENU

Now click Start > run and type C:\Download\WindowsXP-KB835935-SP2-ENU.exe -x

this will extract that to a folder

Now browse and find the folder you just made C:\SPExtract to Extract all WindowsXP-KB835935-SP2-ENU to that folder

Once you have extracted the files from WindowsXP-KB835935-SP2-ENU to C:\SPExtract

Strat run and type
c:\SPExtract\i386\update\update.exe /s:c:\WinXPCD

Now you made Integrating the Service Pack 2 into Windows XP

all you need is make bootabl CD from C:\WinXPCD Folder

I still couldnt get AutoStreamer to work so i skipped that step and went right to UBCD and BartPE. Other than that i'll keep you updated (on this thread) if i find a fix and if this UBCD works. Thanks for ALLLLLL the help you guys, to bad we couldnt find a solution for all those who also have this issue.

*waits eagerly for the next UBCD version smile.gif *

Thanks,

Well OEM versions of the XP CD 8 times out of 10 won't work. They remove and add stuff and AS usually can't work with them. The worst is system recovery discs, I hate those and they are half the reason why I would never "buy" a system. It's a lot more fun to build them yourself anyways, plus you know exactly what is going into it. You can only complain to yourself if you put a crappy video card in it and save up to replace the junk. I'm glad you manually created a slipstreamed XP, hopefully BPE will accept it. Looking forward to WinUBCD (UBCD4Win) questions you may have.

I completely agree! and trying to maintain those systems to.... god i love working for my university's IT. i get everybody and their brother comming to me for help with their Dell systems etc. etc. Gotta love when Dell wants $300 for a new motherboard or some such crap

Im so glad i built my system from the ground up.
SteelTrepid
Hell, for $300 you could strip all the usable parts (hdd, CD drive, etc.) and buy a new case (if necessary) and better mobo than the crap they may try to sell you! You'll end up saving at least $100 and be able to upgrade something, buy a DVD burner or something!!

HAHAHA!!! thats exactly what i did for my RA frosh year. His Dell MB failed and they wanted $300 dollars for a new one. I told him

"for $300 dollars i could build you a new system (taking into consideration that i would re-use his HD, CDROM, CPU etc. etc.)"

and thats what we did one saturday afternoon after the parts came in from newegg.com biggrin.gif

----------------edit------------------

ok, new prob. i tested out the UBCD that i build from the slipstreamed XP that we discussed above. It begins to load and then i get an

"ntfs.sys file is corrupt

press any key to re-start"

besides the fact that i couldnt find the "Any" key( tongue.gif ) do you think i could delete the ntfs.sys file and try to re-slipstream?
stidyup
Sounds more like either it's a bad burn with the CD or the CD-Rom doesn't like the CD.

Are you using a CD-RW? As some CD Rom's don't like them. Try a CD-R if you are using one.

I've had the same problem in the past and it's always been down to either the CD or the CD-Rom having read problems.
BrancoBlace
hmm.. i was using a CD-R, but i'll try it again and see how it works.

im pretty sure it isnt the cd drive itself, my co-workers and i have used that drive with several UBCDs and they've all worked great.

Thanks,
Branco
