Microsoft has said it will be a challenge to convince some consumers to buy its new version of Office.

Office, the world's most popular productivity suite, includes Word, Excel, Outlook and other tools.

"One of the biggest challenges... is to fight that perception that old versions of software are good enough," said Microsoft's Chris Capossela.

Office 2007 goes on sale to business on 30 November, the same date new operating system Vista is launched.

Our business model of course allows you to keep using Office 2003 - the software doesn't really expire, " said Mr Capossela, corporate vice president of the Microsoft Business Division.

Many large businesses will have Office 2007 delivered as part of existing IT contracts but small business and individual consumers will need persuading to make the change.

Really????? Most people only use about 5-10% of the functions of Office as it is, so why are people going to part with good money for something they don't use or need??? MS other big problem is Open Office for most home users this offers all the word processing power you need and it's free.

I'll upgrade but only because I can get it with the license agreement at work, if I didn't have that perk I'd just use Open Office.

Yup, same here. I can get Office 2007 and Vista all for free as long as I don't quit work, lol. Probably the only reason I would use Office. Even at work I probably only use 20% of all of Office's features, though I can't say the same about our Document Specialists. I got Office 2003 from a friend who had like 10 licenses from MSDN so he gave me a license, otherwise Open Office all the way! Vista, on the other hand, will have to wait anyway. smile.gif

My employer is a fairly large (mostly UK) company, and OFFICE 2003 was just rolled out. OFFICE 2000 was good enough for 95% of all work using OFFICE. My company Dell laptop came loaded with XP, but laptops and desktops were put on W2K because it is a known and stable platform. We may see XP in a year or two.

ROFL Sorry, I don't mean that mean, but XP is just as stable, if not more-so than 2K and Office 2003 is FAR better than 2K, especially Outlook. Not much difference between Office XP and 2003 though. We'll probably move to Office 2007 by January or so and Vista by mid next year. Then again, we only have like 25 employees. smile.gif
