I want to get Symantec Ghost 8.0 write to an external USB CD/DVD drive.

My older UWBCD ver.2 does it just fine and I do not understand why ubcd4win v3.0 does not. It sees my external USB DVD drive as a DVD-ROM only. USB and ASPI plugins are installed and running.

DigiWiz or anyone who got ghost 8 to work with ubcd4win v3.0 and write to external USB DVD-R, please help. I did search the forum and did see some info, but cannot resolve the problem so far.

Thanks.

I'm afraid I won't be much help - I've never tried Ghost 8 in a 3.x environment, but from your post, it would seem them the problem lies somewhere in the changes between 2.x and 3.x. I can only tell you that, in my personal builds, I have USB working just fine WITHOUT a so-called USB plugin - it's been working for as long as I can remember... so while many folks make a big deal about the so-called USB plugin (written long ago), I don't use it and USB is working - go figure wink.gif

Yes, I will surely give it a try and will post tomorrow. Meanwhile, I would like to clarify the following. From other topics I learnt that there exist two different “waspi.dll”. one from Adaptec and the one from Nero. Which one is used in UBCD4Win ver.3?
pcuser
I just wanted to mention that I still have Ghost8 and use it for backing up to an external USB harddrive from UBCD4Win 3.0 on a regular basis. I've never tried to write directly to an external cd/dvd burner though so maybe that can help narrow down the problem.

Hopefully Hilander999's suggestion will work.
hilander999
3.0 has the original version provided by adaptec.

BTW there are many versions of that file provided with different hardware/software bundles.

I do remember there being some other isues with using Ghost and a usb drive.

Try my change to the aspi plugin & if that does not clear up your problem I will look at one of my old builds to see what I had to add for the ghost problem. Info on this can be found at 911cd.net but it's burried in large topics that are hard to follow at times.
hilander999
seems to be this topic and a combination of aspi drivers and AFSINST.

Using Ghost32.exe to write an image file to CD/DVD
Ghost32.exe is installed with the Symantec Ghost Console and the Symantec Ghost Standard Tools; however, if you want to use Ghost32.exe to write to a CD/
DVD, then you must ensure access to the following files:
Ghostcdr.dll
NT drivers

Ghostcdr.dll is installed with Ghost32.exe.
Ensure that Ghostcdr.dll is in the path.

NT drivers - If you are running an NT-based operating system (Windows NT/2000/
XP), then you must install the required drivers from a command prompt.
Use the executable, Afsinst.exe, to install the drivers. Afsinst.exe is on the Symantec Ghost CD in the following directory: \Extras\OAKCDR\WinNT_2k_XP\

To install drivers for Ghost32.exe to write to a CD/DVD on Windows NT/2000/XP
1 On the Windows taskbar, click Start > Run.
2 At the command prompt, type
E:\Extras\OAKCDR\WinNT_2k_XP\Afsinst.exe /install /noflag
where E: is the drive letter for the CD drive.
3 Restart the computer.

If your 2.x version of ubcd4win was working then all you should need is the change posted for the aspi plugin.

hilander999,
I have changed aspi.inf as you advised . Now ghost can write to the internal (IDE) CD/DVD, but still cannot write to the external USB CD/DVD. I must say that before I changed aspi.inf, ghost could not write to the internal (IDE) CD/DVD, so the change of aspi.inf did some good.

Just in case, I need to mention that (thanks to Joshua) I have removed drivers\SCSIAdapter\Ximeta\ALL_NetDisk to get reed of a boot error “Insufficient memory for ndasscsi.sys ". I think I do not have SCSI adapters on my Tecra S1

SCSIAdapter is simply the folder for the mass storage drivers whether they are scsi based or not. Incidentally an IDE drive may actually be scsi, rll or mfm ( and possibly others ) based... the IDE part is just a method used so a common interface is now available to each of these types.

Would deleting the folder "drivers\SCSIAdapter\Ximeta\ALL_NetDisk" affect external USB CD/DVD drives?
hilander999
The only other plugin that may effect this aspect of the build is "CD Burning: DVD-RAM Drivers + Utilities".
Try disabling that plugin & test to see if it works, if it does not work I ecpect you will need the AFSINST.EXE plugin I mentioned earlier.

When I setup ghost for a usb-cdrw drive it would not work without that plugin, so I'm guessing you will have to try that before we will know.

No... but it wouldn't matter even if it somehow did... that stopped your system from booting period so you would still not have access to the drives.

If you don't want to take my word for it.. read the INF files and TEXTSETUP.OEM file to see what it would affect by not having them.

I am totally confused now mad.gifI just booted from one of my old UWBC ver.2.0 (on the same PC) and ghost could not write to my external USB DVD. Almost 2 years ago, I did modify my UWBCD v2.0 setup a few times and did have a couple of such boot CDs, perhaps with modified versions… Not sure anymore…May be I was just dreaming?

Anyway, can anyone reconfirm that his (/her rolleyes.gif) ghost8 is capable of writing to external USB CD/DVD specifically under UBCD4win ver.3 ?

Is it possible that Pebuilder.exe or UBCD4WinBuilder.exe copies Windows system files or drivers not only from a specified WinXP intallation folder, but also from my actual PC system folders? More generally, could the built image be dependent on my PC Windows setup? (To build my UBCD4win image, I use WinXP intallation which is different from the one I have on my PC.)

Can I run two or more different versions of Pebuilder or UBCD4WinBuilder on the same PC (one at the time, of course)?
hilander999
UBCD4WIN or a standard bartpe created with pebuilder does not use files from the build system UNLESS the plugins being used are written that way. None of the default plugins are done like that and ubcd4win has never had anything like this included because it would cause too many errors when users had different versons os what file was needed.

I still say your going to have to use the plugin I linked to before it will work. I know I had to do this a few years ago and the quoted portion of the ghost help file should tell you that its a real issue and not just a dream.

I will take a look at my old build and see what needs changed for it to be fully compatable with the new release of ubcd4win. (302)

Try adding this plugin to UBCD\plugin\CDBurning\AFSINST
http://toms.homelinux.org/hilander999/plugins/afsinst.rar

I do not have this hardware or use ghost any more so this plugin has not been tested by anyone.
USE AT YOUR OWN RISK.

This should do the trick as I remember having that same issues you did and unless the statup entry I have here has an error this plugin should do what you need to get ghost working for usb recorders.

If you recieve errors durring the inital startup phase, let me know EXACTLY what they are so I can correct them.

ENJOY

I gave it a try. Ghost still cannot write to an external USB CD/DVD. At start up, I get a message:

OK, I switched to a different method for the startup. Re-download from the same link and try again.

Hi, there.

To my understanding, the files of ghostcdr.dll, ghost32.exe and the driver "afsinst.exe" must be extracted
from the same version of Ghost. It means that we can't extract the ghost32.exe from Ghost 9.0
but copy the driver "afsinst.exe" from Ghost Corporate version 8.2.

My company uses the latest server version "Ghost Solution Suite v1.1" and it includes all the features of
Ghost 8.3 and its required driver". Plus, the CD/DVD function in Ghost32.exe can be unlocked.

I don't ever think of making a copy for myself. You know, I don't want to lose my job from the very start
of year 2007. Perhaps, your folks can download a trial version from Symantec and then install the Ghost 8.3.
After that, you will get a correct version of afsinst.exe, ghostcdr.dll and ghost32.exe.

But our problem is: how can we add the executeable driver "afsinst.exe" on ubcd4win or PEbuilder?
After we install the driver, we need to reboot the system in order to activate it.

This is what I have from my Ghost 8.0 plugin instructions file:

QUOTE
Ghost32 (version 8.0!) is certified to run on Microsoft Windows Preinstallation Environment (WinPE).
But it also works on BartPE.
Ghost32 is not free, buy it from Symantec.
To activate support for CD or DVD write, you also need to enabled the "ASPI" plugin.

Before you can use the plugin you must copy some files to the plugin directory.

Install and activate ghost as described in the ghost installation manual.
Then copy the following files from programs files\symantec\ghost into the plugin\ghost8\files directory:
ghost32.exe, ghostexp.exe, ghostsrv.exe, ghostcdr.dll

Meaning it just wants you to install Ghost on the PC, then copy those four files to your plugin folder. Has always worked for me. Or are you talking about something else? smile.gif

I wanted to say that the latest version of Ghost32.exe
(either from Ghost 8.3 or from Ghost Solution Suite 1.1) provides better support for
external storage drive, Raid as well as SATA-II hard disk.

The above user has a hard time running Ghost32.exe with DVD-RW disable.
The latest version of ghost32.exe might be the solution, I think.

It would be so great if someone can write a plug-in for this version.

I'm using 8.0 here, and it has no problem recognizing my RAID 0 array, DVD drives or USB drives.

UBCD4Win v3 use "Driver: Adaptec ASPI".

Adaptec ASPI dosn't support USB devices.
You have to use another ASPI layer, if you need USB ASPI access.

Nero wnaspi32.dll does support USB devices.
Nero offers wnaspi32.dll for download, but distributing is not allowed.

Does Ghost8 support Nero wnaspi32.dll?
