Hi people I'm a new comer.
I purchased 10 Hitachi SCSI 520 Block size drive with the understanding they could be changed to 512 block size format to use with Window. I have tried several Utility softwares with no luck.
I have been looking at this site about Barts utility software. I also was told about there old site and I tried to make up the utility disk and couldn't. I bumpt into thes site and saw the writes was purchased and there was a simpler way to download the utility. So far I haven't been able to do it.
First, Will Barts Utility change block size of these drives? OR at least will it tell me if I have damaged the drives over the course of using other uitilities.
Hitachis utility give me a diefective Drive error but the tech at Hitachi states that doesn't me the drives are bad! Due to the type of drive thay are, 520 block size used in Sun or HP OR? Servers; and could not assist me any further.
Carn any one here at Ultimate Boot CD help me? Please! I don't want to throw these drives away thay were to expencive. I',m disabled and on a fixed income so you can see my point. I hope you all do.
I Want to keep and use these drives and put them to use.
HELP! Thank you all for your time. Sincerely, Carl Finch.

Does your question relate to http://www.nu2.nu/scsi/ ?

BartPE is another tool http://www.nu2.nu/pebuilder/

I'm not aware of a 520/512 tool integrated in BartPE.

Wich tools did you tried?

Did you tried 520to512.exe ?

How to change the block size of a hard drive using Linux and the scu utility (updated May 6 2004!)

I promise to keep this short! I have an A5000 that I have hooked up to an Ultra 2 and am using as a NAS device. Needless to say this is for home and I can't afford to buy Sun disks. The 14 9gb drives it came with, well, many were having problems and the ones that weren't were just too small to be useful.

I came across a great deal on used 36gb FCAL IBM drives pulled from a Clariion on eBay, so I grabbed 10 of them. That was the easy part. The hard part was getting them to work. The A5000 would spin them up OK, but when Solaris scanned the bus, it would just hang when it came up to one of these new disks.

It turns out that Clariion (and many other RAID) disks are formatted with 520 byte sectors, but Sun and Linux and Windows expect it to be 512. This causes the disk to be unusable on any of these systems. Needless to say, that was quite a bummer.

It took me a few weeks of Googling and experimentation to come up with a procedure that works. If anyone tells you that you can't change the block size of a disk drive, I'm proud to say that they are sadly mistaken.

Hi. Thank you for your reply. I'm not sure what a 520 to 512.exe Is in what O S ? I used Dos in the past but not for 7 years now. I was givin the Web site of Barts by a Company called SCSITool.com
The tech at SCSITOOL believed that Barts could do the block resize. THERE Utility will cost - but I can't affod 4500 dollars to resize 10 drives. Besides that is a rediculous price for a utility. The tech was very consciencious of my state and sincerer in his offerings. That is cool. He normally would not have done that!
I have also tried Hiachis Utilitily but theres will not work Iether. All other mass storage utilities availible on line that I could find , and one i just tried is SpotMu utility I found over the net at a cost of 99.00. Thay guarrentied there product to to the resize so - I broke down an bought! Bummer! It didn't work! but the cool part is they refunded me. COOL! If my wife found out I did that she would have?????
Last are you the person that email me on Linux? Please People may I kept in contact with you all on this dilemma? Also If any on out there can help on the problem please contact me! Sincerely, Carl Finch.

So I booted from a PC DOS 7 diskette, then ran 520to512.exe from the floppy drive.

520to512.exe is a DOS application.
A DOS ASPI driver maybe necessary relating to your hardware.

No, I didn't wrote a email.

Format is a internal function of a SCSI hard disk.
You have to call this feature.
There are several free tools around.

Bart's SCSITOOL, 520to512.exe and sg_format had been named already.

Great! were do you get DOS 7? I haven't use Dos in 7 years, and I undetstand the foamting is an internal function of all drives, it is the software that permits it. You state 520 to 512.exe is in Dos 7 applacation. Is it that simple? Enter and prompt 520 to 512.exe and the software will take care of the rest? If it isn't could you help in andy way over the net please. I really want to use these drives. Carl.

That info was given to me by another person through this web site. I have been tring to locate this persons forum to reply .

You probably need to provide DOS a driver to see the scsi card... check for drivers that should have come with the card to see if it even supports DOS or not and if it does follow their instructions for them.

Which LSI scsi card do you use?

http://www.lsi.com/ offers DOS drivers and firmware updates.

If above fails, you may add Bart's SCSITOOL to this floppy.
Launch Bart's SCSITOOL from floppy.

Hi again. I could execute the dos software in a: but there was no symbios\symidisk.sys in the packet. The exe file wouln's load into config.sys. I had to type that in and one other file but not the sysmbios\symdisk.sys.
The Barts software scsitool does it have the 520 to 512? Of is it just to get the bios ready for the 520to512 exe to be readable?
Please keep in touch. Carl

No, Barts software scsitool is another approach.
Use the prepared floppy disk, copy Bart scsitool to floppy too.
Use eiher 520to512.exe or Bart scsitool.

Hello,

I know it has been some time but I think I can help...

get sdparm v 1.03

http://sg.torque.net/sg/sdparm.html

http://sg.torque.net/sg/p/sdparm.exe (windows version - also available for other OS)

My drive was 73GB Hitachi FC drives, but they are basically SCSI U320 drives.

sdparm --wscan

This will display the name of the drives ie. PD1 PD2 etc.

sg_format --format --size=512 --count=143374738 PD1

Once the format has started you can use F3 and just change to next drive number PD2 etc.

Once there is no more activity (could take some time) on the drive, you can now use Disk Manager MMC
to format NTFS with default setting and the drives should work 100%.

I hope this helps, please notify me if it does.

Gonna have to try this soon! I have 5 FC9 netapp shelves stuffed full of 36GB drives running in a copper FC loop attached to ICP VORTEX single channel Raid card (a european branded Adaptec) found some 73's for 10 bucks each and bought 45 of them only to find out they came outta a dell clarion.

Tried several non raid FC cards to low level them, guess I ma have to modify the US version dos driver and see if the util works.
So far (before I moved to DC) not a single OS has seen or addressed the drives, they'll show on card bios but not Slowaris, Windblows, FREEBSD, or any flavor of IX picks them up, however they will see a shelf full of 36GB drives (my backup hotspare shelf)

The final goal is to have 35 drives -3 for hotspares and RAID5 for just a tad over 2TB of rock solid storage for under 1000 bucks, now if I could only afford to pay the power bill they generate!
