Run RescueME.bat after extracting the contents.

RescueME is a bat file that gives the user options to secure there PC, remove virus's and recover data. I hope this will help most user's rectify problems themselves with minimum fuss.

The main menu options are as follows:

Scan for Virus's (Use AntiVir, McAfee Virus Scan + Stinger, Trend Micro Sysclean, Sophos Sav32Cli)
Install AntiVirus Sofware (AntiVir, Avast, AVG) - ClamWin may be included at later date)
Install Firewall (Zone Alarm, Sygate, Kerio, SecurePoint, Softperfect, Filescab)
Install Spyware Removers (Spybot, Adaware)
Recover Deleted Files (Restoration)
Run HijackThis

All the user needs to do is follow the on screen prompts until any of the GUI's appear.

The only software included is Restoration for file recovery, download and unzip are just used by the bat file, all other software must be downloaded by the user, all the downloads are freeware (mostly limited to Home Use).

I will probably add the ability to install file recovery software at later date, and possible dirms and any other suggestions people make.

It's a 350kb download which means it's ultra portable will fit on a floppy, although you can't run it from there as it would need copying to the hdd. You can run it from a usb flash drive providing you had sufficient room to extract the need files (probably min drive size of about 256mb, maybe as low as 128mb, if you had all the software stored).

As far as I'm aware the bat file should run on Win95, 98, ME, NT, 2K, XP but I've not tested it, whether the software will install on the older OS I don't know.

Some of the download links are likely to change which means at some point they will need updating, keep your eyes peeled for updated versions of RescueME.

V1.21 is now released, I think I've now got all the teething problems out of the script and everything should work (famous last words laugh.giflaugh.gif)

I've tested all the download links and they all work, I changed a few from the last release that seemed to have a problem.

Thanks for the great tool.

Could you please change the "RescueME98.bat"
At the end you mention "end" after ":end"
This is not needed and gives an error.
There's only need for ":end"

The name "RESCUEME98.BAT" is longer than 8-3 character's.
Perhaps "RESCUE98.BAT" is better

Thanks for the info smile.gif

I've removed the end from the end smile.gif

Plus I've changed the name to Rescue98.bat as requested.

It has now been uploaded to the 3 download locations.

@stidyup

I don't know if it is a problem in win98 or also in the other version, but with the menu of mcafee, the files of mcafee are deleted before the execution of the scangui.exe, meaning scangui.exe opens, but before you can scan, the files to use are deleted.

If you change the line "scangui.exe" into "start /wait scangui.exe", the files are deleted after you close scangui.exe.

I haven't tested, but i think it's the same problem with "avwin.exe"

Hi

I've only been able to test on WinXP PC's that have internet access, I know the rescueme.bat would run on 98 which is why I did a version that used choice.exe

I've just tested out both bat files and they work fine on XP.

I've edited the rescue98.bat and added start /wait please redownload the file and let me know if it's sorted.

Thanks.

RescueME has just been updated with the new ftp locations for sysclean, as mentioned elsewhere the original site has either been moved or overloaded.
stidyup
Rescue98.bat has been updated to include F-prot for dos. I don't think this will run successfully on a NT based system.
stidyup
RescueME has just been updated to V1.44. I've added the ability to install some freeware file recovery software.

Disk Investigator and PC Inspector.
stidyup
Elite Toolbar remover has now been added.

RescueME CD builder

RescueME now has a new companion the RescueME CD builder, which is a 1mb download.

The CD will allow you to do the following:

Install AVG, Avast or AntiVir from the CD.

Install Spybot, Spyware Blaster and Adaware - download latest updates for Spybot and Adaware

Remove Virus's with AntiVir (Run AVWIN.EXE in Windows copy from CD to HDD before using), Sophos (32bit for Windows and obviously the Dos program for Dos), Trend Mico's Sysclean (For use in Windows Only, copy from CD to HDD before using), McAfee (Run Scangui in Windows, use Scanpm.exe in Dos), F-Prot (Dos/9x only). Mwav (Windows only) is included as it's useful for advanced users how may want to manually remove infections.

Standalone Hijack removers CWS Shredder and Elite Toolbar Remover

RescueMECD contains all the necessary tools to create a bootable CD which will remove virus's from any FAT/FAT32/NTFS partition. Included in the download are mkisofs.exe and SCDWriter.

Run ResCDBuild.bat to download all necessary files (NB this download process is only recommended for people with broadband connections, the end process will create a CD approx 180mb. Download.exe doesn't support resume, if your on dialup manually download the files you need), at the end of the download process it will build the ISO image for you, all you have to do then is burn the CD image file with SmallCDWriter (provided).

I just built a CD using the latest version 1.54. The Stinger download is incorrect and gives version 2.5.6 not the latest at http://vil.nai.com/vil/stinger/ V2.5.9 named Stng259.exe.

The ResCDbuild.bat file is dated 10/7. I downloaded from http://www.rescueme4win.org/RescueMECD.htm I also didn't see any thing for Sygate and the Power Defragmentor GUI. The mirror site appears to OK.

RescueME is different from RescueME DOS and RescueME CD. I think only RescueME was updated, but stidyup will help clear that up for you.

@stidyup
I've had your downloads on my downloads site for some time now, if you wanted to create a link to download them there too. smile.gifJust http://downloads.littlbuger.info

Yes, I just figured that out. I didn't realize that the CD was different. The differences are not obvious from the website. At least to me. smile.gif
stidyup
@ Littlbuger, thanks I'll create a link when I get chance smile.gif

@ thomasjk

RescueMe has 3 different options to use, the RescueMECD does need updating as some of the links need changing, hopefully I'll get chance to do that later in the week. I only updated the bat files on the main page, these don't create a CD and is just designed to run from the local hdd or a external writable source such as usb flash drive/hdd etc....

Thanks, Stidyup. I did figure out the differences. On the CD version is there a way to rebuild the CD without updating all the files. I pulled down the latest Stng259 and put it in the Stinger folder. How do I rebuild the CD?

Just run the following file JustCDCreate.bat smile.gif

Just run the following file JustCDCreate.bat smile.gif

I ran the file but nothing happended. I added a Pause statement and captured the text output:

C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Documents\My Documents\My Download Files\Res
cume\ResCD>Echo Building RescueME 4 Dos
Building RescueME 4 Dos

C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Documents\My Documents\My Download Files\Res
cume\ResCD>mkisofs -iso-level 1 -b BOOTABLE.img -c boot.cat -J -l -R -r -o -V -o
resCDs.iso C:\resCD
mkisofs: Warning: -rock has same effect as -rational-rock on this platform.
mkisofs: No such file or directory. Invalid node - C:\resCD

C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Documents\My Documents\My Download Files\Res
cume\ResCD>pause
Press any key to continue . . .

For some reason the bat file errors' out. Both BOOTABLE.img and boot.cat are in the same directory.
LittlBUGer
You are getting that error because you are running a DOS script in your My Documents folder, which obviously has spaces in the name. DOS doesn't like spaces in anything really.

QUOTE

C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Documents\My Documents\My Download Files\Rescume\ResCD

Redo everything from a folder on the root of your drive WITHOUT any spaces in the name, such as C:\ResCD and then it should work. Otherwise, it might just be that the output folder, C:\resCD, doesn't exist and needs to be there before you do anything. smile.gif
stidyup
Change the line in the bat file to this:

mkisofs -iso-level 1 -b BOOTABLE.img -c boot.cat -J -l -R -r -o -V -o resCDs.iso \resCD

It will then work smile.gif
