I have been researching for this for so much time in vain. Finally I got the idea and also a small & simple plugin from cdob.
I have pruned & modified it a little & consolidating it here for the benefit of others.
I have Sound enabled & working in my Intel DG33FB motherboard with integrated RealTek HD Audio (with ALC888).
I have built with WinXP. This Plugin-inf file is a very simple one - only about 20 lines.
This do not require full XPE, & work with vanilla BartPE OR UBCDWin.
Requirements:-
- HWPnP from ParaGlider (UBCDWin-3.10 already has this)
- xpe-pnp.inf file from Sherpya's XPE-1.07 (Do NOT require the full XPE plugin)
Edit this file & remove reference to "xpeinit.exe" RunOnce entries. - InfoCacheBuild.exe thru Postprocessing or AutoBuild, (to edit & prune the driver-inf files of any CopyFile, DelReg sections)
(UBCDWin has this by default) - A Plugin-inf file created using the classic BartPE method, & placed in a folder inside plugin folder.
(Do not place this under driver folder, since this is not a MassStrorage or Net driver.) - Driver files from the Vendor/manufacturers driver download.
This may be a huge-size download. But you require only some minimal files from here.
For my RealTek HD Audio I used only 2 files (RtkHDAud.sys, HDA.inf = 4 MB) from the WDM/XP folder of the download of 98 MB size.
(I used Driver-Ver- 5.10.0.5436, downloaded from Intelsite for my DG33FB motherboard) - MS HD AudioClass Driver-ver-1.0a files from the MS-KB888111 download. (4 files: hdaudio.inf, hdaudio.sys, hdaudbus.inf, hdaudbus.sys for Win-XP)
-You can get it from MS download KB888111 OR from RyanVM's Post-SP2-Update Pack (any ver from 2.1.11 - 2.2.x beta)- Extract from it.
The Total plugin (folder) size, with all driver & other files is approx 4.5MB. The total build size (target-CD) will grow by approx 15MB due to this plugin (mainly due to xpe-pnp.inf i think.)
This plugin just enables the basic sound capability to your BartPE's build. But NO fancy bells & whistles (Control panel/SystemTray/StartMenu Tools or Utilities).
You can basic-test your sound hardware, play music/media files including movies. (I use VLCPlayer)
The Volume-Control (Playback) Speaker-Icon in SystemTray is ofcourse there.

Structure of Plugin:
RealTek_HDAudio
--> KB888111 .................... : folder for kb888111 files (hdaudio.inf, hdaudio.sys, hdaudbus.inf, hdaudbus.sys)
--> RealTek ....................... : folder for RealTek Driver Files (RtkHDAud.sys, HDA.inf)
--> RealTekHDAudio.inf ........ : plugin-inf file.
Even though I tried this & is working for my RealTek HD Audio (ALC888) Driver Ver-5.10.0.5436,
I feel this will work for most of the RealTek Drivers, with the very same two files ( RtkHDAud.sys, HDA.inf ) from your own drivers.
cdob had someother RealTek Hardware, and had working sound with the same two files.
Simply strip these two files from the WDM/ WinXP folders from your own Realtek Drivers, & try.
You have to Run "HWPnp.exe +all +HDAUDIO" after boot to enable HD audio (either manually in BartPE or from Pre-Shell in UBCDWin).
Regards & Happy Sound with minimal Overheads......
This is an experimental version (as originally mentioned by cdob) & users can provide their feedback here.
Even though this provides only basic sound, expert-users can edit the plugin-inf [DeleLine] section, to selectively enable further features, but then then requisite additional driver files has to be identified & included along with possible registry entries!. Else failure may result ranging from no-sound to BSOD, I think!
