Hey guys,
This is my first post so please be gentle with me. Although I have recently given Ben some good e-mail feedback, I will also take this opportunity to again congratulate him (and all concerned) on an awesome product. I managed to take on the project and seamlessly compile the CD without any hassle. Well... perhaps one little hiccup. I have probably left something out of the drivers folder during the build process because - just like others users posts I have seen on the board - I am experiencing that "Unable to Install Network Adapters" error message. *I have compiled the CD with XP SP2 (copied to hard drive as suggested) *I did extract the complete driver add-ons to the drivers folder *I had no error messages during the build process *The .iso was burnt and verified no problem. I am using a Compaq laptop with both an internal modem and PCMCIA card modem (sometimes the internal modem takes a holiday). As for the network adapter, I am not certain about the specs and would need advice on how to gather that info. Any help and advice you good people could provide would be greatly appreciated. |

Hi Bram
Do the following in Windows to identify your network card. Start Control Panel Performance and Maintenance System Hardware Device Manager Network Adapter This should then display the full name/model of the NIC installed. Please give all details as they are shown. It could be a conflict with another driver or the drivers aren't there that you need. |

I have probably left something out of the drivers folder during the build process because - just like others users posts I have seen on the board - I am experiencing that "Unable to Install Network Adapters" error message. As for the network adapter, I am not certain about the specs and would need advice on how to gather that info. To ID your network adapter, start Windows normally and go to the Control Panel. Then go to System. Click on the Hardware tab. Click Device Manager button. You will see a list of your devices. Double click Network adapters. This will expand the folder and you should see the name of your adapter. From the build directions, it says "3a. If you downloaded the "driver" download and wish to include it then read the instructions in this step, if not skip to step 4. You need to set the path to extract the "driver" download file into the "drivers" folder, for example "c:\pebuilder313\drivers". After the file is extracted you should have several new folders in your "\drivers\net" and "\driver\scsiadapter" folders."" Do you have a bunch of manufacturers names under \pebuilder313\drivers\net ? If you don't, then you didn't extract right. You should be able to find the manufacturer of your network adapter in here. |

Hey guys,
Thanks for the replies. I did extract the driver add-on to the correct folder as per the build instructions, I purposely double checked the drivers folder to make sure, so I am fairly confident on that score. I also ran the disk on another PC at work and it set up the network part no problem. I am not certain about the Network Adapter part as going by your posts I fully expected to see only one adapter - not several. Let me know what you think. I have included the info for my network adapter(s) below as they appeared in the device manager tree. The network adapter tree was hidden as well if that means anything. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Network Adapter (drop down folders) *Direct Parallel *RAS Async Adapter *Wan Miniport (IP) *Wan Miniport (IP) Packet scheduler miniport *Wan Miniport (L2TP) *Wan Miniport (PPPOE) *Wan Miniport (PPTP) ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Unfortunately this deals with areas of computing that I am least knowledgable about and a a result the above means nothing to me. Thanks again for your assistance (IMG:http://www.ubcd4win.com/forum/style_emoticons/default/wink.gif) |

Thanks again for your assistance (IMG:http://www.ubcd4win.com/forum/style_emoticons/default/wink.gif) Well, unfortunately that information tells us nothing. And as for the Network Adapters category not being there (you said hidden), that's really not right, so whatever you're seeing is not what we're looking for. What I'm thinking is that you just have a standard modem or PCMCIA modem of which this driver pack will not support. This driver pack will only support network cards or built-in LAN, and also many different storage devices. If no network adapter shows up by default in your Device Manager but you do see a couple of Modems, then you only have a standard modem of which will require a driver plugin to work correctly. Hopefully Steel will read this and can help you by making a proper driver plugin for you. Otherwise, make sure you have admin rights, right-click on your "My Computer" icon and go to Properties. Click on the Hardware tab and then click on the Device Manager button. You should be able to see the default items there, so do not show any hidden devices. They are hidden for a reason. You can also go to your Start button -> All Programs -> Accessories -> System Tools -> System Information. Once in there, on the left, expand the Components category, then Network and then click on Adapter. Scroll through the list a bit until you find a device Name that is different than what you mentioned above. If you don't find anything, then you don't have a LAN/Network device. If you do see something, please let us know all of the information there. Thanks. (IMG:http://www.ubcd4win.com/forum/style_emoticons/default/smile.gif) |

Hey there LittlBUGer,
Thanks for the reply. If I check the device manager tree without showing hidden devices there is nothing there for network adapters. Also, system information only mirrors what I already found in the previous post (no new devices). So it seems that your instincts are correct and there is no network/LAN card on my system. This obviously requires the driver plugin you mentioned which well and truly surpasses my level of expertise. All my computer skills have been slowly (and painfully) gained the hard way and at this stage of my development I consider my self a minor geek only. My laptop* is fairly old by PC standards so - considering the vast number of UBCD4Win users - there might possibly be a plugin out there already... propping up the wobbly end of somebody's kitchen table perhaps. I happily await your replies (IMG:http://www.ubcd4win.com/forum/style_emoticons/default/smile.gif) * Compaq presario 12XL400 |

The term "Network Adapter" is referring to an ethernet adapter (used for high speed internet/networking) and it doesn't look like you have one so the message "Unable to Install Network Adapters" is correct because you don't have one to install/configure. Tom |

??
jiang, If your hinting that you're having similar problems then you need to start a new thread/topic and post as many details as you can about the problem that you're having (and your setup). Thanks, Tom |

I participate in quite a few forums around the traps.
But that's the first time any thread that I've started has been hijacked... by myself ... VIA my own quotation. What a strange thing to do. Don'y worry Jiang, I'm not offended - just perplexed. Good luck to you anyway. (IMG:http://www.ubcd4win.com/forum/style_emoticons/default/blink.gif) |

Thanks, Tom jiang reported the post to me just to let me know that he has the same problem with a different Network card. So, no worries, though a strange way to let us know of his problem... :-\ |
