I am trying to boot from the just downloaded UBCD, I thought the CD I allready had was damaged, but no. I dont get the message displayed that I should hit any key to boot from the CD. I do get that message using the MS XP pro CD. The CD (s) I use to burn are cheap ones (Datarex 52X) and they are NOT RW, I tried with a blank RW, no go, I tried with a blank DVD, no go. I reset BIOS, no change, I changed, lowered, PIO settings for the CD in the BIOS, no change. Stuck here, help would be great. Is there a known issue with asus laptops. I yet did not find anything.
update when booting from A Norton Ghost CD from the same CD type (Datarex) it does boot, the message says, "booting from Atapi", booting on the XP cd is says "no emulation"

Hi franklos
Can you confirm what you have done, have you followed these instructions here?
How to build
Your above post seems a little confused, can you expand further on what you have done.
Thanks

Hi,
I just rebuild an ISO activating the `enable hit any key to boot from CD` opion. And that issue is resolved it boots and runs untill I get a blue screen: STOP: c00000221 Unknown Hard Error \Systemroot32\System32\ntdll.dll.
MS advises to reinstall formentioned file, but my current question is, is that the file used by UBD4win or the one resident on the laptop I am trying to fix?
Sorry if all seems unclear to you.

There's only one post over at 911 I could find on this error here.
One suggestion here is using cheap media, is this the case? Never heard of Datarex but how cheap are they? Can you try burning your CD at a lower speed. What software have you used to burn the image file with?
Have you slipstreamed SP1 or SP2 successfully? Both SP1 and SP2 are OK for ubcd4win, I use SP2 in my builds.
I've had problems in the past with the CD booting because of the pagefile on the harddisk, what are you trying to fix on your PC?

Hardware Analysis
Please read this thread it may help. The problem could be faulty hardward if both Windows and UBCD4Win can't boot try using Ultimate Boot CD (note this is not UBCD4Win) this is a dos CD and will allow you to run a memory test.
Download the ISO file and burn the file to CD, please make sure you read the FAQs on how to burn the ISO image.

Seems like a hardware problem, although it could be a corrupt pagefile causing the problem or another file that's been corrupted.
Does the laptop have a floppy drive? NTFS4Dos this tool is free and you can run chkdsk from this bootdisk.
If you don't have a floppy drive you need to find a PC that does and make a image of the floppy. Floppy Image can be downloaded here, make a uncompressed image of the created disk and then use your CD burning program to create a boot CD with the image.
SilentNight CD 1mb
CDBurner XP 12mb can both do this for free.
Although if you have a commercial CD burning program like Nero this can do it as well.
Boot with NTFS4Dos and run chkdsk on the harddrive.

Hi
thanks for the effords, I have used the Norton Ghost boot CD, without problems, and used the integrated norton diskdoctor, also the antivirus tool, norton found and fixed some errors, no virusses were found. I will build a new CD using a different XP cd, lets hope that works.

lets be a little more specific here. The issue allot of times is with using a cdburner that is going bad or using media that does not get along well with your cdbunrer.
It is usually not a bad hard drive. It could possibly be caused by bad ram or possibly motherboard.
However cdrom and media are the most likely with ram being a far third.

more specific..
Well I can use the (3) UBCD4win CD(s) i created so far, on my 2 other PC' s and my 2 other laptops, no problem. The asus laptop IS the problem. All the CDs are created with Nero6 enterprise edition on a TEAK dvd/cd rom burner, lowered the write speed to 10x. ALso I can perfectly boot on my Norton Ghost CD which is burned on the same media using the same burner. When I started the procedure this morning I first used UBCD dos version, with the same problem. It only seems to boot on Microsoft XP and 2003 CDs, but when I tried to install over the first install, even the file copie seemd to go very slow and it hung right after copying the last file, It does not even try to load the GUI at that point.
I can only think that the HDD has no more space left.
Because this laptop has no FDD, and the owner of it never ordered the USB FDD, I am a bit stuck here. I will try to take the HDD out and put it in one of my laptops to see if the issue remains and take it from there. Thanks a lot so far, if you can confirm that a full HDD could cause this boot problem with UBCD4win, please let me know.

just as I thought the cdrom in the laptop is marginal or not very well built or both.
you see quite a few drives have compatibility issues with different kinds of media. They can also stop working properly when they get old. In this case I would bet the cdrom in the asus is just not very compatible. For instance sony cdburners are known for this they are very picky about the media you use in them.

test finished negative, the HDD works fine in my own laptop, boots straight into the OS. Also straight into UBCD4win. Bummer for my friend his asus has a hardware issue, hope he still has warranty, but his data is saved. Thank you all very much, see ya aroung
