"Try, disable 3ware 7506 drivers." - can't! I must use. They don't seem to be the problem, thankfully.
"Which DVD writer do you use?" - LG multi 4163b . . .
Device Instance ID in XP is
IDE\CDROMHL-DT-ST_DVDRAM_GSA-4163B_______________A100____\5&494505C&0&0.0.0
Noteworthy - PE built with full SCSI package has same DVD-drive Device Instance ID as above; and growisofs doesn't work.
Then I try only 3ware7k8k SCSI driver, the DVD-drive's Device Instance ID is different. . .
IDE\CDROMHL-DT-ST_DVDRAM_GSA-4163B_______________A100____\334B34393942324A313420362020202020202020
. . . and growisofs works.
But I think it's this SATA adapter built into the GA8PE Ultra 2 motherboard...
System has no SATA drives and the SATA controller is "disabled" in the BIOS.
I've tried both +RW and -RAM media, and only difference is +RW wears out FAST!
I've tried both vanilla PE and XPE/HWPnP/INFcache and hardware IDs are the same.
I've tried various (and none) NIC drivers - same growisofs results.
Here's a comparison of non-/working "devcon hwids * > out" 's
Left Side - all SCSI drivers - growisofs fails
Right Side - only 3ware7k8k SCSI driver - growisofs works.

. . .which makes me question this onboad SATA controller.
Could this be as simple as just "enable" the empty SATA controller in BIOS?
