Full Version: BartPE and PE Builder?
UBCD4Win Forums > Main Forum: UBCD4Windows - Support > General Questions

Hi,
I tried to make this XPsp2 startup thing,

1. Extracted from winzip to E:\PEBuilder

2. Run "pebuilder" and got E:\PEBuilder\BartPE of 150mb & subdirectories

The difficulty occured in sending files to the CD.

The Nero cannot format the CD-R, as it accepts only CD-WR.

I formated a CD-R with Roxio's "DirectCD" program, and a 15mb file went in CD.

When I put this CD in the drive to reboot PC, with Autorun activated, NOTHING happens.

When I double clicked that 15mb file, Easy CD creator opened and Warned that this is a DirectCD disk and cannot read it.

How does one uses this thing and where do I go wrong?

Any help will be appreciated, nick

PS. how does one insert a screen shot here??
webmedic
you can not use direct cd or any packet writing type thing to do this. like nero incd.

All packet writing software is only for use under windows. And as such will not make a bootable cd for you.

Did you read on what this CD is meant for and how to actually build it? It seems you are just doing a vanilla build of BartPE with nothing else and are having some issues burning the .iso file it created (if it did create one). Please explain the process you took to build the file/CD and whatnot. The more details the better. smile.gif

Hi LittlBUGer,
sorry for the double, tried but could not delete and move it to the proper forum.

Was I naive to think I could have a startup CD like the old floppies days?.

Read & followed to the letter info on "How to build the CD"

Extracted zip to e:\pebuilder313\BartPE(597mb), XPsp2 is on the HD, run pebuilder, with ISO/CD clicked showing h:\UBCD4Windows\ubcd4win24.iso, (h:\ is my CD Rom), Burn to CD clicked, put CD-R in Roxio powered CDRom and clicked on "Build".

A millionn files flashed by and at 2.8 % hang for one hr. Rebooted PC

CD-R has in it an Easy Creator 19mb file "ubcd4win24", but could do nothing with it. Moved it to HD, and CDBXP to burn it on another CD-R installing 356mb & closing it.

Rebooted PC went some way and stoped with error:
"File\i386\system32\ntoskrnl.exe loaded. The error copy 12800" press any to exit

I could not find the "log" file for errors.

I renamed the first "plugins" file, do I need to change it later?.

What are all those new plugin's used for. Do I need them?

Is it necessary to install the Drivers download I got?

Was it necessary to create all those directories (over 700mb) to end up with a corrupted 19mb ISO file?.

What do you think I do wrong? nick

PS. For Mr.Webmedic I found this:-
"....You cannot simply burn the ISO file directly to CD it has to be processed by CD burning software to be burnt correctly. I use several freeware applications to accomplish this. I have used Nero and several others but do not honestly care for them..... use CDBXP"

Hi LittlBUGer,
Since last post I took the bull by the horn, deleted all previous rubbish I created, removed all references in Registry, and started from scratch again.

I did all as first time, but perhaps in proper order now.

I Unticked the "Burn to CD", and burned the created 339mb image, with CDBXP, to a CD-R.

BUT, when I rebooted (CDRM first choice in Bios), the rom flashed a few times and went and started winXP as usual.

I was expecting to go to DOS like screen with utilities available.

1. Was this a normal behaviour?.

2. I renamed the first "plugins" file, do I need to change it later?.

3. What are all those new plugin's used for. Do I need them?

4. Is it necessary to install the Driver download I got?

Hope am not boring you with all this rubbish, nick

Just to clarify, this is much more powerful than just a bunch of DOS utilities. Our CD actually boots up into a Windows environment in which you can then run a huge amount of utilities.

As for building, I don't know why you would need to delete registry entries to start fresh, as none are created. In any case, here's the basic steps that are listed in the How To Build page:

-Extract pebuilder to a folder
-Rename or delete the original plugins folder
-Extract the UBCD4Win download into the same folder you extraced pebuilder to
-Extract the drivers download into the drivers folder (use this so that much more hardware is recognized)
-Run pebuilder.exe and tell it where you source XP CD information is (hopefully on your HD)
-Tell it to create an .iso file on your HD somewhere (but DO NOT tell it to burn it)
-Then just run it and it should work

If you did all correctly and your BIOS is truly setup to boot from the CD drive first, you should get to a screen where it says it's loading the UBCD4Win and then it will show the default Windows XP loading screen, and then it will go into the actual environment of the CD.

Now, as for your questions:

1.) No, it doesn't sound like normal behavior at all as I explained above. If you want DOS utilities, you've looked in the wrong place. Check out the original UBCD for such tools.

2.) Renaming the plugins is fine and you don't need to do anything else with it.

3.) Yes, you need the "new" plugins from the main UBCD4Win download as those are all of the programs/tools you'll be able to use.

4.) It's not necessary but the drivers will add the ability for the CD to recognize a much wider array of hardware to boot on.

That should be it. smile.gif

Well I did exactly what you and the instruction file said, bios is set for cdrom first, then HD, and the start up showed no signs of the CD lot.

I am looking in that CD now and it only contains one file "ubcd4win24", and its properties say it is an Easy CD Creator Image File.

Any suggestions of why is not successful? nick

What software did you use to burn the ISO file?? All it sounds like you did was burn the single file to a CD. You have to find the option in your burning software to burn an ISO image.

If you are not sure how to do this with your current CD burning software....try the recommended software on the site...CD Burner XP Pro. It's very easy to use and is free!!
LittlBUGer
As Steel said, you burned the .iso file image wrong. You need to find the option in your burning software to Burn an Image or Burn and ISO Image. Such as for example, in Nero, it's Recorder -> Burn Image.... You CAN'T burn the file directly to the CD as a data CD, it HAS to be burned as an image. smile.gif

Thanks Steel / LittlBUGer,
stupid of me, forgot the file>write to ISO.

BUT although ISO this time, 6 files oppened i386, progs etc (339mb), rebooted and no DOS like things appeared.

The CD drive spun wildly, windows started as if normal, only slight change in the looks of fonts & or icons & a green "START" button came on left bottom corner.

Looked into these utils, but unfortunately I touched something and am stuck now with black lettering of my system info, cpu, partitions etc.

No amount of rebooting will change my desctop to what it was. You know HOW??

I did not install the driver download in case I f-up my system. Have enough trouble with the Invidia lot as it is.

PS btw, I tried this CD on my other PC with only CDRoms, no R-W, and is not seen.
WELL then, I failed again, if you can clean me up I will pack up this business, although it does look impressive work. nick
LittlBUGer
"Write to ISO" seems like something that would copy the data from a CD to an ISO image, but if it indeed worked as you said and burned the ISO to the CD, then that's fine.

It doesn't matter what the drive is in the computer when you boot the CD, nor does the OS matter. As long as the drive can read CDs, and the BIOS is set to boot from the CD, it will work. Once in the UBCD4Win environment, you can run all kinds of programs and whatnot, so I'm not sure what you mean by your system information "blacked" out. Please be more specific on where you went or what you were looking at. You can take screenshots while in there and save them to your HD.

Adding the drivers download does NOT screw up anything on your computer. Using the UBCD4Win at all does NOT by default screw anything up anywhere, as most of it is written to your RAM, which gets deleted on every reboot. So, it's only if you went into a tool and purposely did something to mess up your computer that it would, in fact, be messed up. As soon as you reboot your computer, take the CD OUT of the drive if you want to boot back into the normal Windows environment, otherwise it will just boot from the CD again.

Other than that, I'm still having a hard time understanding exactly what you mean. Please elaborate and be more descriptive so that we can all help you get this working and understand what's going on. Thanks. smile.gif
nichos
I did'nt say blacked out.

Now with the CD in the trash can, and the PC rebooted a few times, the desktop icon's font remain changed and there is superimposed on the blue win. screen system info, in BLACK capital Letters like:-

CPU:- 2.2ghz AMD Athlon 64 3500+
Memory 1024mb
OS Ver. win XP
c:\ 46.56 GB Fat32
...................
............
etc etc etc 16 lines

I clicked on one of the utilities in the green "Start" button. I d'nt rememmber which one.
Surely as experts you know what progs. you put in the plugins & which one is printing on the desktop the info described.
My Starter program does not show where this thing is embeded to get rid of it.

PE is not in Add/Remove progs., but the registry is littered with it.

How on earth do I insert a screen shot in this forum, I do not have a web page.

Please help to clean my desktop and bring it where it was.

PS. Just removed all DIRs & traces of this program from the HD and the registry, rebooted and the desktop is still infected.

Thanx, nick
SteelTrepid
Your desktop and system are not infected.

It sounds like you installed BGInfo onto your system or set it as your wallpaper. Try checking your Display Settings. Someone a few weeks ago reported an issue like this but did not go into detail or explain what they did. They also stopped replying to messages. So we were unable to help them.

This also doesn't make very much sense. You stated earlier that you didn't burn the CD right, or actually we let you know you didn't. I don't understand how you got it to AutoPlay. I don't think you ever booted the project, but somehow actually did create the right CD....but ran it when Windows was loaded.

There is a lot going on here. glare.gif
LittlBUGer
Yes, nothing is infected or wrong with your system. It seems, as Steel said, that you possibly didn't actually even boot from the CD, you just loaded it in Windows and then somehow got the program BGInfo to install on your system from the CD. All it does is add helpful information about your system onto the Desktop Wallpaper automatically, nothing more. You should be able to easily disable it, but I would like to see a screenshot just to be sure.

While in Windows with no other windows or screens open, press the Print Screen key and then go into MS Paint and do a Edit -> Paste. Save the pasted image as a .jpg file and then what you can do is just send that file to me, or go to a free picture hosting server like PhotoBucket and upload it there and then place a link to it here. If you need help, please let us/me know.

Again, I assure you nothing is infected or wrong with your machine and our CD is not crap. You have just ran into some interesting issues that need to be dealt with appropriately. Thanks for your time. smile.gif
nichos
Steel you are a wizard,
you did it, it was Biginfo and I embeded it in Display Properties > Desktop > Background.

I pushed the slider up to None and presto, gone, all back to normal.

Although I deleted it's reference in the registry, it still stayed on reboot.

Your second paragraph boggled me, after your prompt I reburned to anew CD, but used the command in the file menu to write in ISO form, and instead of just burn a Easy CD Creator image of "pebuilder", it opened it in the CD to 6 bootable files.

Then restarted the PC with the bios set for CDRom first and the CD in the drive.

I was expecting to see DOS like things on startup, but instead it looked like a normal startup, with the green "Srart" button showing, and when I investigated it I must have clicked on BigInfo.

Tell me one thing, if a PC is up the blink not booting and you started it with this CD, would it start as normally starts, or how would the screen look? would it be an windows GUI or Dos like black screen with text on it and the green button.?

Has anybody ever used it in anger?
Tnanx anyway and good night, is 00:30 hrs here. nick

PS you never explained how to post fotos.

please see: pebuilder FAQ #4... bad slipstream

This is just one of many issues that needs to be addressed.

You must start with a solid foundation. The XP install CD must be SP1 or greater and should be slipstreamed using AutoStreamer. The bad slipstream error may be due to using a Dell (or other major manufacturer) recovery CD. A full version of XP is preferred.
Check out this guide for using AutoStreamer.

Reading the main page and the "How to build" instructions very carefully and having a basic understanding is a very good start.

It wouldn't hurt to read the main page FAQ and the forum FAQ before trying to build.

Sometimes, the best thing to do is to back up and punt!

That's all I got. Good luck! smile.gif

nichos,

Your statement of "Has anybody ever used it in anger?" seems to imply that you think somehow there is something wrong with the project. UBCD4Win does contain some very powerful utilities.. and yes they can corrupt a system if used improperly.. but don't you think it is wise to first read how to use such powerful utilities before you blindly jumped in and started trying to use them? There are excellent step by step instructions available but you would have had to read and understood them first. If you didn't understand something... the people here on the forum would have certainly have tried to explain it for you.

It certainly looks like you didn't read any information on what this project is about. Nowhere on the site does it state that its a DOS boot disk... yet you said you were expecting one.. that doesn't make much sense to me.

I really hope you don't blame the tools provided just because you didn't understand them and may have made a mistake because of that. I'm sure everyone here can tell you a story of when they messed something up.. I know I can (but I will save you and the other from those stories). If nothing else I hope you gain something from what has happened and in the future you take a little more care in learning what you are working with so things like this are less likely to happen.

Now that I'm done preaching... the first suggestion I want to make to you is to backup all of your important data. I think there is a very good possibility (and I hope I'm wrong) that you have messed up pretty bad because you didn't take the time to first learn and read... or at least ask how to use the tools provided.

If I'm guessing correctly, and I can't say I am... I think you may have used the utility that can install BartPe to your hard drive from what you said about having a bunch of references to it in the registry instead of the utility to create just a CD. Normally, you would use this tool to place a copy of BartPe into its own partition for a set of emergency tools.. I think instead that you may have installed it as your primary Windows. It may be reversable... but I've never done it and really don't know what to suggest to fix it. You can try to use System Restore.. but it wasn't made to protect in these cases so it may not work. You could try a Windows repair install (see http://www.michaelstevenstech.com/XPrepairinstall.htm ) but you will still have the references to BartPE all over. Basically.. I think you at least need to prepare for the worst.. even if it didn't happen.

I hope you luck in whatever you do...

PS.. if you have no place to host the pictures you asked about... don't worry about it.. you can't post them on a forum then. If you do have a place you can put them... click the BB Code Help link for a brief information on the tags you need to have them show here.

Dear Kind people,

I have the gratest admiration for the hundreds like you who are dedicated and work hard to provide free utilities to help idiots like me.

I am deeply sorry if I offended you, never doubted you, how could I after so much efford showing in the project.

Tools are only as good as the user.

Never meant to indicate that my PC ended up with such big problems, except that unwitingly I put BIGINFO in my desktop properties, and wanted help to clear it.

I expressed my thanks to SteelTrebit who told me what I did wrong, and where to fix it.

My PC works fine and I enjoy the MS Fl.Sim, which others in forums helped me to setup.

I apologise for jumping the gun about Dos-like screen, I meant no offence.

Although I found the info you provided and read it a couple of times, I stand corrected, you did hit the nail on the head, I am impatient and rushing to get on with it, the only way that works for me, and saw me through 47yrs of earning my living flying.

Also apologise for not improoving my bad English, after so many years I remained a bloody foreigner.

I looked up the info again, but what happens and how the screen looks like after booting from the CD, still eludes me.

Does it start up and fixes the failed OS, or does it give me help-tools to use to analise the specific fault and fix it myself.

Please use idiot's approach to explain, the only way I can understand. nick

PS. LittlBUGer, I read your post BUT only halve of it, missed the intersting bit & cannot show a screenshot now, as I deleted all the rubbish I created on the HD.
I suffer with "macular Hole" an age degenerating fault of the eyes, and misses halve of the things in the focus area, so I need to put extra care on seeing things.
Thanks for the "PhotoBucket" I will try it.

Trying to get a shot of my bootup CD's contents.

Unfortunately, the "FSscreen" shot I took & the IrfanView 100% save, did not make it big enough and clear, or is it me again!.

The file "ubcd4win24" I created with pebuilder was burned in this CD using the XPpro burner's menu option:-
file > Write Disc from ISO file.

How would the "UBCD4Win environment" looked like on screen, from a good CD?

nichos,

I can certainly understand your problems you have because of your eyes. I'm about 2 years younger than you and also have issues like that but I don't think mine are as serious (I hope not anyway). I'm very new to using UBCD4Win and my eyes aren't that good either, so I'm going to leave looking at your screen to those that are more familiar with it so I don't stear you in the wrong direction for that part.

I also would never think that you were an idiot... inexperience is a completely different thing and lets face it, you have to start learning somewhere. So please do not degrade yourself and call yourself that... you are simply "new" to this type of thing and some frustration is expected as you learn new things.

Your use of English has been pretty good I thought for a "bloody foreigner" smile.gif... so I guess you don't have much of an excuse there.

You had asked to explain how to use UBCD4Win for fixing a specific fault, but didn't say which type of fault you were talking about. UBCD4Win adds about 136 different utilities to the BartPE enviroment so going into specifics would be like recreating the website and forum information... not a small task in itself. Generally speaking though, it contains antivirus, antispyware, disk utilities to copy or repair files, recover lost passwords, access the internet for websites, email and other items... basically it has tools for just about everything you can imagine in it.

You also asked what does it look like... well, it looks like Windows really with only some small minor differences in the task bar and menu's. If you use the Config tool that they have just created to build and configure it with .. it even includes a "Virtual Windows" that will let you look at it just to see what it does contain. This may actually be a good idea for you to try since it won't be able to access your actuall Windows hard drives (its a virtual Windows so it isn't able to).

To use the Config tool, you would need to sort of "start over"... it will download all of the files you need to use and also offer to run the QEMU if you wish, this is the Virtual Windows I was speaking of. You can get this config tool and find out more from http://www.ubcd4win.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=3098&hl= ....

I know I didn't answer some of your questions.. but I hope I pointed you in the directions you needed to help you understand it better. One other tip that you may find handy... the forum search... if you have a question about something specific, it has probably been answered before... try using it for some of the things you have a question about and see if that doesn't help also.

RDSOK, thanx for the encouragement my old crony.

Hope you did not need the Macula Operation (quick and painless, but must lay 3-4 weeks face down 24 hrs a day to take effect) Now that is a marvel bit of engineering by the doctors.

WELL, WELL, just MADE IT and got the CD to boot into this marvelous Win like "Ultimate Boot CD 4 Windows" environment.

Have two CD-RW and I used this CD in the normal drive I run CDs to load progs etc. Always have both to Autoplay.

A few minutes ago decided to try and reboot from the second drive, and lo & behold, the b...y thing worked.

I hope wont need to use it in anger, but all those utils will come handy if I make sence of them; it is good to have, and thanks again to the chaps who care and make such complicated things for us.

Sorry for causing such havoc lads, it was only to keep you on your toes.......!!!

When I recover from the shock, I will endever to get to grips of how to use your recovery program.

For those unfortunate like me who need to see what the result would look like:-

On bootup with the UBCD4Win CD first I saw 2 DOS like screens with text about loading with B & W bars filing along at bottom of screen, L to R.

Then these:
the opening Desktop. There is a green "Start" batton on L bottom corner, for opening the System and Program tools
