I first ran the latest ver. of RootKitty in WIN XP Pro SP2 and it seemed to work OK. It created a .txt file with all my C: HDD files and the MD5 hash for each file.

I then booted with the UBCD4Win CD and ran the ver. loaded there in DOS mode. The .txt file created only contained my WIN XP MS files and no MD5 hashes were present.

I then ran the RootKitty compare and it only showed my WIN XP MS files with nothing checked.

Is this the way RootKitty is supposed to work?

You are suppose to run the second RootKitty scan from the UBCD4Win boot... not from DOS mode
Plan A is always more effective when the device you are working on understands that Plan B involves either a large hammer or screwdriver....

Sorry, I meant that I did run it from the UBCD4Win boot disk. I selected PE-Scan there.

RootKitty does a file listing from XP and then a file listing from UBCD4Win and compares the results. It shows you all changes, good or bad.

hmm, I just noticed that the version included in the download is a very old one. I'm almost finished with a new release that's much nicer (better and faster) than any previous version and fixes all known issues. I suggest waiting for this one to be released but if you can't wait then you can find the current version on my website HERE
If you're afraid of taking any chances then the chances are great that you will never learn anything

Multiboot Plugins - UBUSB (Ultimate Boot USB) - EzPcFix - RootKitty - Network Configuration Utility - UnIsoFS - A Small Linux Distro - SELogger - HashME - WSock - My Paypal

Thanks for the info. The ver. I downloaded yesterday and ran in WIN XP SP2 is 1.00.0009 . When I build a new UBCD4Win CD, I will update with this ver. or I will just get your newest ver. from your website.
